{"id":297948,"date":"2026-01-22T16:43:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/297948\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T16:43:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:43:08","slug":"it-felt-instantly-welcoming-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/297948\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It felt instantly welcoming\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Maddie Ashby is toying with the idea of booking a third solo trip to Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The full-time solo traveller is \u201cnot at all surprised\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> was ranked as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/travel\/2026\/01\/21\/dublin-named-best-destination-in-the-world-for-solo-travellers-by-tripadvisor\/#:~:text=Dublin%20ranked%20above%20Bali%2C%20Hanoi,solo%20travel%20destination%20for%202026&amp;text=1%20MIN%20READ-,The%20Irish%20capital%20has%20been%20named%20as%20the%20best%20solo,Awards%20Best%20of%20the%20Best.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/travel\/2026\/01\/21\/dublin-named-best-destination-in-the-world-for-solo-travellers-by-tripadvisor\/#:~:text=Dublin%20ranked%20above%20Bali%2C%20Hanoi,solo%20travel%20destination%20for%202026&amp;text=1%20MIN%20READ-,The%20Irish%20capital%20has%20been%20named%20as%20the%20best%20solo,Awards%20Best%20of%20the%20Best.\">Tripadvisor\u2019s number one solo travel destination for 2026<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A former software developer, Ashby first visited the Irish capital in January 2024 and booked a follow-up trip eight months later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI just missed the city so much that I came back in August of that year on a whirlwind trip, for 48 hours.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ashby who hails from Virginia just outside of Washington, DC says that Dubliners are \u201cvery lucky to live in a beautiful city with stunning architecture and a bright, bubbling atmosphere\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her highlights included Trinity College, where she enjoyed picnics and the Book Of Kells, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\">Temple Bar<\/a> \u201cto see live music\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In terms of the cost of visiting Dublin, she says it is more expensive than most European cities, but does not think it is prohibitively so. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think compared to DC it\u2019s similar [in cost],\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn August I found hostel rates to be more expensive but I think if you are smart about budgeting, cook meals at the hostel and don\u2019t buy too many drinks out, then it\u2019s doable,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Maddie Ashby in Dublin's Temple Bar in 2024\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/JH5GGI42JFEX5EGXOGCR4FK6GQ.webp.jpeg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1199\"\/>Maddie Ashby in Dublin&#8217;s Temple Bar in 2024 <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Personal safety was not an issue for Ashby, who says \u201cI absolutely felt safe all over Ireland but especially in Dublin\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nadya Trujillo, who has just completed a master\u2019s in user experience design, agrees that Dublin felt safe as a solo travelling tourist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou always have to be aware of your surroundings when you are solo travelling, especially if you are a woman,\u201d she says, adding \u201cDublin felt like one of the safest cities that I have ever been to\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne of the first streets I walked through across from Dublin Castle had all these international flags hanging across it. As an Asian-American, it felt instantly welcoming\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trujillo, who does not enjoy the taste of alcohol, was pleasantly surprised that Dublin \u201cwas not just a destination for drinking like in the Temple Bar area\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Instead, she enjoyed \u201cseeing the cultural and architectural side of things\u201d, adding that her personal favourite attractions were Dublin Castle, St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral and Marsh\u2019s Library. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Nadya Trujillo in Marsh's Library, Dublin, in November 2025\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/XLXJX7U76VEOVENDNHRAHKPZLU.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>Nadya Trujillo in Marsh&#8217;s Library, Dublin, in November 2025 <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She says that although food and drink can be expensive, \u201cthe attractions were very cheap\u201d, with Marsh\u2019s Library only costing \u20ac4 for a student ticket. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trujillo also saved money by not paying for public transport, finding the city \u201ccompact and easy to navigate\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEverything was walkable\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t take public transport once other than from the airport into Dublin\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trujillo would \u201c100 per cent agree\u201d with Tripadvisor\u2019s ranking of Dublin as a top solo travel destination. \u201cIf anyone is looking for a place to solo travel, Dublin is a great place to start\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Model and actor Gabe Escobar is a seasoned solo traveller, saying he has \u201cnever travelled with another person\u201d since he was 18. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 23-year-old found Dublin \u201ceasily navigable\u201d as a solo traveller. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In part he believes this is because there is no language barrier for Americans visiting, but also that there is \u201cdecent public transportation, people who are very friendly and loads of hostels to choose from\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hostels can be hit or miss, according to Escobar, who says \u201cI\u2019ve stayed in many bad hostels in my life and you just roll with the punches\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he had an unfortunate mishap one day after spraining his ankle on the Howth cliff walk before travelling to Cork city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was limping, it was raining, and my hostel was at the top of a hill which I trudged up with my backpack,\u201d he says. When he got there he found the hostel to be \u201ccramped and smelt terrible\u201d. \u201cHostels are a gamble\u201a and I gambled and lost that day.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aside from this hiccup Escobar believes \u201cit makes complete sense\u201d that Dublin has been recognised as a top solo travel destination. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Maddie Ashby is toying with the idea of booking a third solo trip to Ireland.
