{"id":298395,"date":"2026-01-22T22:07:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T22:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/298395\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T22:07:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T22:07:07","slug":"irishman-charged-in-germany-over-alleged-break-in-of-israeli-arms-facility-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/298395\/","title":{"rendered":"Irishman charged in Germany over alleged break-in of Israeli arms facility \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Irishman has been formally charged for his alleged role in an attack on a German-based facility of the Israeli arms company Elbit Systems last September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After four months on remand, Dubliner Daniel Tatlow-Devally and four others have been charged with causing an estimated \u20ac1 million in damage to property, trespassing and using symbols linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a>, which is classified in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\">Germany<\/a> as a terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tatlow-Devally and the four others \u2013 who are British, German and Spanish citizens \u2013 are also facing charges of membership  of a criminal organisation, namely Palestine Action Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The state prosecutor accuses them of breaking into a premises of Elbit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a>\u2019s largest arms company, in the southwestern German city of Ulm on September 8th last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At around 3.30am the five, along with at least six other unidentified people, are accused of damaging the glass facade of the building using tools and red dye before entering via a side window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Once inside, they are accused of smashing, with an intent to destroy, screens, PCs and telephones in offices, as well as sinks and toilets in a bathroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn a technical laboratory of the firm, they destroyed sensitive measuring devices as well as electronic machines and smashed screens and windows,\u201d the state prosecutor\u2019s statement said,  claiming the accused left \u201cconsiderable damage to property of around \u20ac1 million\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lawyers for the accused said they are likely to go on trial in April. It is the latest in a series of court cases in Germany linked to the fall-out of the October 7th, 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel \u2013 and Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">military response<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/17\/family-of-dubliner-held-over-israeli-arms-factory-break-in-criticises-treatment-by-germany\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Family of Dubliner held over Israeli arms factory break-in criticises treatment by GermanyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The five accused have been held on remand since September after a Stuttgart court agreed with prosecutors that there was a real flight risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As well as the main charges, defence lawyers are likely to dispute prosecutor claims over Palestine Action Germany and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former is a British pro-Palestinian direct-action network, proscribed in the UK last July as a terrorist organisation.<b> <\/b>Its German sister organisation has not been classified as a criminal or terrorist organisation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another point of contention will be what classifies as a symbol of Hamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A month after the October 7th attacks, Germany\u2019s interior ministry issued a decree outlawing the phrase, \u201cFrom the the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d. This was based on its symbolic links to Hamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The claim has been disputed by campaigners and dismissed by several German courts.
