These beautiful flowers have much to teach us, from their medicinal properties to their ability to brighten the dullest winter days,\u201d says Head Gardener at Hever Castle &amp; Gardens, Neil Miller. <\/p>\n<p>How to plant bulbs in January<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Whether planting in borders or pots, proper technique is essential to give your bulbs the best chance. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"29.0\">In borders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"30.0\">Ensure the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"30.1\">Plant bulbs at a depth of two to three times their size, with the pointed end facing upwards.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"30.2\">\u201cFor a naturalistic style, scatter your bulbs over the soil and plant where they land,\u201d suggests Susie. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"30.3\">Avoid planting under large evergreen trees or shrubs, as these cast too much shade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"33.0\">In pots:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"34.0\">Use a pot with drainage holes and fill it with a mix of compost and horticultural grit (3:1 ratio).<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"34.1\">Plant bulbs at a depth of about 12cm, ensuring no large air gaps.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"34.2\">Cover your pot with chicken wire or rose prunings to deter squirrels from disturbing tulips until the bulbs start to shoot through.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"34.3\">Place the pot in a sunny spot, but don\u2019t overwater; if the bulbs are wet, they can rot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIt\u2019s a nice winter job to do,\u201d Susie continues, \u201cespecially when the weather makes it hard to work elsewhere in the garden.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Skye Buchanan, head gardener at Links House at Royal Dornoch, also emphasises the importance of soil preparation and aftercare.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cPut bulbs in at least two or three times their size, then mulch over the top with well-rotted manure or compost,\u201d he advises. \u201cNip off the heads and feed with fertiliser or bone meal once they flower. Leave the stems to die back naturally to ensure strong bulbs for next year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"44.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"44.0.0\">Ideal flowers to grow in January<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Consider sweet peas if you\u2019re looking for other blooms to brighten your garden. According to a gardening expert at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhinogreenhouses.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.rhinogreenhouses.co.uk\/\"
