But after last night’s episode, their spot at the final round table doesn’t just seem unlikely – it’s impossible.

First off, there’s growing heat on Rachel thanks to Faraaz, while Stephen – who’s been long suspected of being a Traitor – has never really been let off the hook. Throw in a fatal flaw in their strategy, plus Rachel’s plan to go it alone and, well, we have a recipe for Traitor disaster. And that’s not even the half of it! Here’s why Rachel and Stephen have proven we won’t see either of them at the final round table.

Rachel’s days are already numbered

BBC/Studio Lambert/Euan Cherry

Rachel will want to savour the breakfast buffet tomorrow morning, as it’ll likely be her last. The tide is now turning against her – and it’s all down to Faraaz. Last night, he told every single player (even Rachel herself) that she was a Traitor because Fiona’s previous outburst could only have been Traitor in-fighting. And Faraaz’s spot-on theory landed with the Faithfuls. Take Roxy, Rachel’s most ardent supporter, as her reaction was telling. Did she rubbish Faraaz’s accusation? Did she defend Rachel? The answer to both of those questions is: no. Instead, we watched her agonise as the penny slowly dropped. “Please, no. Get me out of this game,” Roxy groaned, realising that her best friend in the game had been playing her all along. If even Roxy has doubts, that spells serious trouble (aka banishment) for Rachel.

She’s going to slip-up – big time

BBC/Studio Lambert/Euan Cherry

Rachel’s going to hammer her own nail in her coffin as she’s been flying too close to the sun. Throughout the series, Rachel has made the odd, questionable comment. For starters, when she was setting up Ross, she turned to him and said: “Was Hugo this dramatic in the turret?” And when a suspicious Faraaz urged Rachel not to kill him, she didn’t play it smooth. Instead, sounding irked, she replied: “Do you know how you know I’m not a Traitor? Because I would’ve killed you on the first night.” This was not the clap-back Rachel intended. Quite the opposite. It revealed another chink in her armour. “My head’s a bit scrambled,” she later confessed. Or, in other words, Rachel was rattled. Under this amount of pressure, it seems clear that Rachel’s not just going to make an ill-advised comment, but a huge slip-up that’ll reveal she’s been a Traitor since day one.

Stephen’s never been in the shade

BBC

The fingers might be pointing towards Rachel, but Stephen is far from safe. His name has been consistently mentioned by the Faithfuls as a possible Traitor, especially by Jessie. She was, of course, on the money with her “library five” theory. Though this didn’t resonate enough with the Faithfuls to banish him, Stephen has only really remained in the competition by luck: it’s just so happened that suspicion on other players has eclipsed his own. Now, though, the numbers are dwindling, and he simply has fewer Faithfuls in the game to use as a deflection tool. Traitor hunter extraordinaire Faraaz is also on to him. Last night, he named Stephen and Jade as his next choices as Traitors after Rachel. Given there has been a question mark over Stephen for a long time, there’s no way the remaining Faithful would allow him through to the final round table. The risk of Stephen being a Traitor is too great.

A betrayal is brewing

BBC/Studio Lambert/Euan Cherry

If, by some miracle, neither Stephen nor Rachel are banished by the Faithfuls, then we can expect Traitor-on-Traitor round two. Rachel – and Stephen – have both said as much. Last night in the turret, Rachel told Stephen: “Please remember nobody can stick up for one another at this point. And if you hear anybody repeat that I’m talking about you, it’s because I have to protect our alliance.” Ouch. Yes, it was a bold tactical move for Rachel. Unfortunately, it was also a ruinous one. Why? Because Rachel has overestimated Stephen’s loyalty towards her. As soon as he clocked her betrayal, he started plotting his own revenge, revealing: “If I did find out that she was going against me behind my back, then game on.” If Rachel throws Stephen under the bus or vice-versa, it’s clear they’re taking each other down with them.

The glaring missed opportunity

Photographer://BBC

Rachel and Stephen’s game plan has been flawless. Or has it? Yes, they’ve fended off rivals, survived multiple banishments and orchestrated Faithful in-fighting. But they’ve also made a catastrophic error that will cost them the game – and that is their failure to recruit. It initially seemed like a wise move to not upset their dynamic, but as the game goes on it’s more apparent recruitment was a missed opportunity. What they should’ve done is recruit a sacrificial lamb – Jade or James would’ve been great options – and kept them in until the penultimate roundtable. At that moment, Stephen and Rachel should’ve offered them on a plate to the Faithfuls to quench their Traitor-hunting thirst. If that had been the case, the Faithfuls would’ve then outed three Traitors – the recruited Traitor, Hugo and Fiona – so would’ve likely believed it was job done, assuring Rachel and Stephen’s spots in the final.

READ MORE ABOUT THE TRAITORS HERE

Until now, it’s seemed that The Traitors’ Rachel and Stephen’s win was guaranteed.
