{"id":299399,"date":"2026-01-23T11:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T11:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/299399\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T11:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T11:56:08","slug":"one-of-dublins-busiest-roads-faces-year-of-traffic-restrictions-due-to-new-water-main-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/299399\/","title":{"rendered":"One of Dublin\u2019s busiest roads faces year of traffic restrictions due to new water main \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One of north <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>\u2019s busiest commuter and tourist routes faces a year of traffic restrictions and diversions, including a 4\u00bd-month road closure, from next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clontarf\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clontarf\/\">Clontarf<\/a> Road, which runs along north Dublin bay, is set for major disruption from February 16th to facilitate the construction of a \u20ac25 million water main serving more than 160,000 homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The work will require the closure of the southbound side of Clontarf Road, used by thousands of motorists to access the city on their morning commute, from the junction of Howth Road to Watermill Road, a distance of 1.5km. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The closure will last for 18 weeks, during which time traffic coming into town from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/howth\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/howth\/\">Howth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sutton\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sutton\/\">Sutton<\/a> will be diverted on to the already congested Howth Road for a distance of 3km. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"James Larkin\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/66M6MPH6OREBPOWN6ZZU4S5NKQ.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"578\"\/>The work will require the closure of the southbound side of Clontarf Road from the junction of Howth Road to Watermill Road, a distance of 1.5km. Map: Paul Scott <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A stop\/go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/traffic\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/traffic\/\">traffic<\/a>-management system will be in place further north on Clontarf Road from the Howth Road junction to Bayside as well as on part of Watermill Road for more than five months. However, motorists can expect restrictions for about 12 months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\">Uisce \u00c9ireann<\/a> said. Bus diversions will also be in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The work is a \u201ccritical project required to stabilise supply\u201d for existing properties and enable the delivery of 12,000 new homes in north Dublin, Uisce \u00c9ireann  programme manager Jessica Dale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe network in northeast Dublin is over 100 years old in some parts and it\u2019s under pressure. Customers can regularly experience issues of pressure loss due to the demand on the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The work \u201cis going to cause disruption to both the local community and also commuters. We\u2019re very conscious of that and we are making every effort to minimise the disruption,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s been extensive engagement with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-bus\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-bus\/\">Dublin Bus<\/a>, and that is ongoing and will continue throughout the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The road works are just the first phase of construction of the 6km water main. Next year Uisce \u00c9ireann will replace the section from the Wooden Bridge to Hollybrook Road. However, this work is not expected to require road closures as the new pipes will be laid in the green area for a 2.6km distance along the Clontarf promenade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Uisce \u00c9ireann said it hoped the cycleway would remain open, but the path next to the seawall would require closure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The water main project was previously considered in tandem with Dublin City Council\u2019s Clontarf flood defence scheme.
