And more than 450 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan,” he said.

The troops who died were “heroes who gave their lives in service of our nation”, he added.

Lucy Aldridge, whose son William died aged 18 in Afghanistan, told The Mirror newspaper that Trump’s remarks were “extremely upsetting.”

Emily Thornberry, chair of parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, denounced them as “so much more than a mistake.”

“It’s an absolute insult. It’s an insult to 457 families who lost someone in Afghanistan. How dare he say we weren’t on the front line?” the Labour Party politician said on the BBC’s Question Time programme on Thursday evening.

According to official UK figures, 405 of the 457 British casualties who died in Afghanistan were killed in hostile military action.

The US reportedly lost more than 2,400 soldiers.

Additional sources • AFP

Published on 23/01/2026 – 14:42 GMT+1 The UK said on Friday that Donald Trump was “wrong to diminish”…

[41
148270,18928,9,10,356,13,14,6,11,12,15,16,6450,5,7,8,393,384,65,66,67
0":"post-299921","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-world","8":"tag-9-11","9":"tag-afghanistan","10":"tag-breaking-news","11":"tag-breakingnews","12":"tag-donald-trump","13":"tag-featured-news","14":"tag-featurednews","15":"tag-headlines","16":"tag-latest-news","17":"tag-latestnews","18":"tag-main-news","19":"tag-mainnews","20":"tag-nato","21":"tag-news","22":"tag-top-stories","23":"tag-topstories","24":"tag-united-kingdom","25":"tag-united-states","26":"tag-world","27":"tag-world-news","28":"tag-worldnews
["GET
