{"id":300364,"date":"2026-01-24T00:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T00:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/300364\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T00:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T00:11:11","slug":"wittman-estes-designs-washington-workshop-and-house-for-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/300364\/","title":{"rendered":"Wittman Estes designs Washington workshop and house for rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seattle-based studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wittman-estes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wittman Estes<\/a> has created a low-profile house separated by a lush garden from an adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">workshop building<\/a>, all designed to work with the rainy climate of Snohomish, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the French Creek Workhops House, the 2,471-square-foot (230-square metre) residence is complemented by a 1,471-square-foot (137-square metre) workshop that has space for waving, glass blowing, furniture making and other artistic pursuits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289922 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_25-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle house and workshop with treeline in background\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Wittman Estes has designed a home and workshop in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>The private home for a newly retired couple sits on a 4.5-acre site that was once used as an animal sanctuary beside a wetland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Conceived as a serene retreat immersed in nature, it offers comfort and beauty throughout the seasons \u2013 sheltering its occupants during the cool, rainy months and opening outward during the dry, warm season,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wittman-estes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wittman Estes<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289926 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_28-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"French Creek Workshop by Wittman Estes\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>It sits low to the ground and has angled sides and overhangs<\/p>\n<p>A corrugated metal roof with deep overhangs shades the wood-clad exterior and large windows that open the interiors up to the central courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>This intermediate outdoor space progresses from a welcome garden, through a series of ponds, to an elevated pathway that runs along the main house.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289911 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"French Creek Workshop by Wittman Estes\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>A pond-filled garden sits between the house and workshop structures<\/p>\n<p>Founding principal Matt Wittman explained that the movement of rainwater drove the form of the design, drawing inspiration from ancient Roman impluvium and routing water into reflecting pools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When it rains, water cascades over the roof edges, sheeting gently into the garden,&#8221; Wittman said. &#8220;Instead of working against the climate, we expressed it \u2013 so the owners can engage with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289907 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"French Creek Workshop by Wittman Estes\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Breezeways run throughout the house and property<\/p>\n<p>The single-level house is designed for ageing-in-place and multigenerational living with wide doorways, flush thresholds and sandblasted concrete floors that were cast-in-place with hydronic radiant heating.<\/p>\n<p>The gentle terracing allows the house to fit into the sloped terrain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289906 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"French Creek Workshop by Wittman Estes\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>It was designed for ageing in place<\/p>\n<p>Slatted wood screens fabricated by the residents enclose the exterior loading dock on the driveway side of the workshop and filter light into the living room.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Interior materials balance artistry and practicality, emphasizing natural warmth and durability,&#8221; prefabricated home in Ontario\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Locally sourced fir and cedar complement terrazzo and concrete surfaces, while reddish-brown soffits and a vivid blue kitchen wall introduce a playful note.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop building, which contains multiple studios to cater to the residents&#8217; crafts, is positioned to minimize noise of both its contents and the adjacent highway, creating a serene, secluded living environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2289919 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/whitman-estes-french-creek-workshop_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"French Creek Workshop by Wittman Estes\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The interiors were designed for &#8220;warmth and durability&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The shed roof lifts up for clerestory windows on the north side that draw even, diffused light into the studios.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They wanted the home to be an expression of who they are,&#8221;
