At last there\u2019s a fix. Millions of Outlook users been plagued with failed restarts and missing emails since Microsoft released its mandatory January security updates. Now the company has confirmed a new emergency update to put things right.<\/p>\n
Microsoft was reasonably quick to admit<\/a> that \u201cClassic Outlook profiles with POP accounts and PSTs hang after Windows updates on January 13, 2026.\u201d Also warning that there\u2019s no fix, but more guidance would be coming soon.<\/p>\n ForbesGoogle\u2019s Gmail Upgrade\u2014Millions Of Accounts Now At RiskBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n This has been serious. Neowin<\/a> reported that \u201cMicrosoft makes Outlook \u2018completely unusable\u2019 as Windows 11 25H2\/24H2 update breaks it.” Those issues include \u201crandom hangs and freezes, unsaved email progresses, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n Microsoft now says<\/a> the issue is more specific. \u201cSome applications became unresponsive or encountered unexpected errors when opening files from or saving files to cloud-based storage, such as OneDrive or Dropbox. In certain Outlook configurations that store PST files on OneDrive, Outlook may hang and fail to reopen unless the process is terminated or the system is restarted.\u201d And affected users would also see \u201cmissing sent Items or previously downloaded emails being re\u2011downloaded.”<\/p>\n The emergency update is available for Windows 11 25H2<\/a>, Windows 11 23H2<\/a> (albeit you should move away from this now, and Windows 10<\/a>. <\/p>\n Forbes\u2018Really Dangerous\u2019\u2014Google Changes Android For All UsersBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n This emergency update follows last week\u2019s<\/a> emergency update, which fixed a failure to shut down flaw and, per Windows Latest<\/a>, \u201ca much more widespread\u201d remote desktop login failure affecting 24H2 and 25H2.”<\/p>\n Microsoft says the new updates are \u201ccumulative and include security fixes and improvements from the January 13, 2026, security update and the out-of-band update from January 17, 2026.\u201d If everything is working fine and you have installed January\u2019s security fixes, you don\u2019t need to update again.
