(AP Photo\/Matt Rourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Among those who are impacted are a group of students and teachers from Col\u00e1iste \u00c9amann R\u00eds in Cork city, who are visiting New York as part of a planned school tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">New York is among the 19 states which have declared a state of emergency, with thousands of international and domestic flights cancelled due to poor visibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking to The Echo, geography, business and economics teacher at Col\u00e1iste \u00c9amann R\u00eds, Brian Kenny, who is currently with the group in New York, said students are \u201cenjoying the novelty\u201d of heavy snowfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur flight was cancelled, so we\u2019re grounded in New York. There\u2019s no update on when it\u2019ll be rescheduled,\u201d said Mr Kenny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe came over on a school trip \u2013 we have 25 students, three teachers and a parent with us \u2013 it was a sight-seeing tour, to take in New York city, but we\u2019ve had an extended stay now!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFortunately enough, they had availability in the hotel we were booked into, so they were able to facilitate us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur coach driver was in contact this morning to say they wouldn&#8217;t be able to collect us, so we never actually went to the airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur flight was due to leave at 8.50pm tonight, but the weather is actually due to get worse throughout the day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s 11am now, and it\u2019s meant to peak at about 3pm \u2013 it&#8217;s snowing quite heavily, but workers are out clearing footpaths and snow ploughs have been moving up and down the streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe students have actually been enjoying the novelty of it so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s -11 degrees outside, so it\u2019s quite cold, but we were prepared, everybody has on their winter gear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4945205_6_articleinline_US_20Weather_20163677.jpg\" alt=\"A person jogs across the Brooklyn Bridge as it snows on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, in New York.
