{"id":304174,"date":"2026-01-26T09:17:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T09:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/304174\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T09:17:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T09:17:08","slug":"trump-is-unrepentant-as-republican-backlash-grows-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/304174\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump is unrepentant as Republican backlash grows \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">state of Minnesota<\/a> remains locked in a bitter dispute with the White House and federal law enforcement agencies over wildly conflicting accounts and interpretations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-parents-of-alex-pretti-say-trump-officials-are-telling-sickening-lies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-parents-of-alex-pretti-say-trump-officials-are-telling-sickening-lies\/\">the killing <\/a>in Minneapolis of a nurse by immigration and customs enforcement (Ice) agents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite a mammoth snowstorm sweeping across the United States, protests and vigils took place in San Francisco, New York, Washington and Los Angeles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-parents-of-alex-pretti-say-trump-officials-are-telling-sickening-lies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-parents-of-alex-pretti-say-trump-officials-are-telling-sickening-lies\/\">hours after Alex Pretti was shot dead<\/a> during a street struggle on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 37-year-old lived locally and worked as an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Videos verified by The New York Times appear to contradict the US Department of Homeland Security\u2019s account of the shooting. Video: Reuters\/Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The fatal incident was captured by video footage from multiple angles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-shooting-deepens-us-immigration-crisis-as-federal-accounts-are-challenged\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-shooting-deepens-us-immigration-crisis-as-federal-accounts-are-challenged\/\">that contradicts assertions<\/a> by Kristi Noem, secretary for the department of Homeland Security, and other leading officials in US president Donald Trump\u2019s administration that Mr Pretti had been \u201cbrandishing a weapon\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A gun, which he was legally carrying, was removed during a struggle with several Ice agents seconds before he was shot, while prone, several times. Mr Pretti had come to assist another protester, who had been pushed to the ground by an agent, seconds before the fatal incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">FBI director Kash Patel on Sunday insisted that Mr Pretti had been the aggressor. \u201cYou do not get to attack law enforcement officials in this country without repercussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Greg Bovino, the Border Patrol commander-at-large, was equally unrepentant when asked why Mr Pretti had been killed for exercising his first amendment right to protest and second amendment right to bear arms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/26\/how-the-trump-administration-rushed-to-judgment-in-minneapolis-shooting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How the Trump administration rushed to judgment in Minneapolis shootingOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI believe that all citizens of the United States have those first and fourth amendment rights as long as they do so peacefully and don\u2019t delay, obstruct or assault anyone in doing that. And that\u2019s the issue here because he was not peacefully doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Treasury secretary Scott Bessent accused Minnesota Democratic governor Tim Walz of escalating civic unrest and suggested paid agitators were confronting immigration agents and \u201cginning things up\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Federal agents use tear gas as they confront protesters in Minneapolis. Photograph: New York Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the video footage of the shooting has caused widespread shock and follows on from the highly criticised fatal shooting of Renee Good (37) in her car in Minneapolis on January 7th. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Louisiana senator Bill Cassidy has been the most senior Republican figure to break from the official White House response. He said the \u201cevents in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing\u201d and that \u201cthe credibility of Ice and the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] are at stake\u201d. He called for a joint federal and state investigation into Mr Pretti\u2019s death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minority Senate leader Chuck Schumer said he would be voting against an upcoming bipartisan funding measure if it included the proposed allocation for the DHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/26\/minneapolis-shooting-most-fox-news-reporting-supports-official-version\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minneapolis shooting: Most Fox News reporting supports official versionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Representative James Comer of Kentucky, a staunch ally of the president\u2019s, appeared to concede that federal agents were killing innocent people in the immigration crackdown, as he suggested on Fox News that Mr Trump should consider removing Ice agents from Minneapolis and sending them elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf the mayor and the governor are going to put our Ice officials in harm\u2019s way, and there\u2019s a chance of losing more innocent lives or whatever, then maybe go to another city and let the people of Minneapolis decide, \u2018Do we want to continue to have all of these illegals?\u2019\u201d said Mr Comer, the chair of the oversight committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Republican chairman of the House homeland security committee, Andrew Garbarino, has sought testimony from leaders at Ice, Customs and Border Protection, and US Citizenship and Immigration Services, saying \u201cmy top priority remains keeping Americans safe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A host of other congressional Republicans have pressed for more information, including representative Michael McCaul of Texas and senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Their statements, in addition to concern expressed from several Republican governors, reflects a party struggling with how to respond to the killing of Pretti. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The breakdown in state and federal trust was reflected in a decision by a US district judge to grant a request from Hennepin County prosecutors in Minneapolis to prevent DHS and other agencies from altering evidence relating to Pretti\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A protester in Minnesota. Photograph: Adam Gray\/AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Trump administration is adamant that its immigration agents are coming under severe provocation in Minneapolis while trying to fulfil an election pledge to apprehend and deport undocumented people and make US cities safer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/trump-says-administration-is-reviewing-everything-about-minneapolis-shooting-a501f48e\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/trump-says-administration-is-reviewing-everything-about-minneapolis-shooting-a501f48e\">interview<\/a> with The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Trump appeared to show some willingness for an investigation, though only after his administration had already made clear their view of who was at fault. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019re looking, we\u2019re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The White House has repeatedly asserted that the problem is not that federal agents are killing protesters. It is that liberals, encouraged and backed by elected Democrats in Minnesota, are seeking to impede a deportation push.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump said in a series of social media posts on Sunday that two American citizens had \u201ctragically\u201d lost their lives amid his administration\u2019s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, but he blamed Democratic leaders for the deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDemocrat run Sanctuary Cities and States are REFUSING to cooperate with ICE, and they are actually encouraging Leftwing Agitators to unlawfully obstruct their operations to arrest the Worst of the Worst People!\u201d he wrote. \u201cBy doing this, Democrats are putting Illegal Alien Criminals over Taxpaying, Law-Abiding Citizens, and they have created dangerous circumstances for EVERYONE involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump, in the posts, also called on officials in Democratic-led cities and states to work with immigration authorities by turning over immigrants lacking legal status who are in state prisons and local jails, and said that Congress should pass legislation to \u201cEND Sanctuary Cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JANUARY 25: A person passes by a poster of Alex Pretti on January 25, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Stephen Maturen\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He drew a contrast with Republican-led states, including Texas, Florida and Louisiana, where he said that immigration operations had not been met with the same level of opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US council of criminal justice last week released a study confirming that the murder rate across 35 cities analysed had fallen to its lowest rate since 1900.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Connecticut senator Chris Murphy warned on Sunday that the flooding of Minneapolis with some 3,000 Ice agents had little to with undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey are there to cause a conflict. They are there to create mayhem. And it isn\u2019t going to be just isolated to Minneapolis,\u201d he said. \u201cAs they continue to staff up with officers who are not trained for this kind of work, this is going to be in Philadelphia, this is going to be in Phoenix. This is coming to your city as well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo, if we don\u2019t stop this in its tracks, what you are seeing in Minnesota \u2013 people being killed for exercising their first amendment rights is going to be a regular feature. That is dystopian. We shouldn\u2019t allow for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former US president Barack Obama called Mr Pretti\u2019s death \u201cheartbreaking\u201d and warned that \u201cmany of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He urged the administration to work with city and state officials \u201cto avert more chaos and achieve legitimate law enforcement goals &#8230; This has to stop\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fellow former Democratic president Bill Clinton joined the call in a post on X, saying the US is facing a historic moment that will shape it for years to come.
