{"id":306286,"date":"2026-01-27T14:26:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/306286\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T14:26:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:26:09","slug":"david-chipperfield-architects-reveals-olympic-ice-rink-in-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/306286\/","title":{"rendered":"David Chipperfield Architects reveals Olympic ice rink in Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/david-chipperfield\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Chipperfield Architects<\/a> has revealed photos of the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/milano-cortina-2026-winter-games\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Winter Olympics<\/a>, which begin next month.<\/p>\n<p>Taken at an ice hockey test event earlier this month, the photos show the building&#8217;s three-tiered facade and the main ice rink arena.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/david-chipperfield-architects-olympic-ice-rink-milan_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena by David Chipperfield Architects \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>David Chipperfield Architects revealed photos of the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena<\/p>\n<p>Located in the Santa Giulia district of Milan, the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena is the only permanent venue being built for this year&#8217;s Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Intended to have a capacity of 14,000, it will host the ice hockey events during the 2026 Winter Olympics, which begin on 6 February.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290541 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/david-chipperfield-architects-olympic-ice-rink-milan_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena by David Chipperfield Architects \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The rink will host the ice hockey events at the 2026 Winter Olympics<\/p>\n<p>The arena is wrapped in three bands of vertical aluminium cladding separated by bands of glazing. Between these metal bands, LED strips were intended to turn the facades into a screen \u2013 although it is unclear if these are complete.<\/p>\n<p>Within the arena the rink is surrounded by two tiers of seating, with corporate boxes above.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/20\/milano-cortina-winter-olympic-cauldron-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/milano-cortina-olympics-cauldron-2026_dezeen_2364_sq_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Milano Cortina Olympic cauldron\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Duo of expanding Winter Olympic cauldrons revealed for Milano Cortina 2026\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the building&#8217;s form was informed by the city&#8217;s Colosseum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The elliptical form of the building is inspired by the archetype of the amphitheatre, being reinterpreted with modern tectonics and materials,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/davidchipperfield.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Chipperfield Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290540 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/david-chipperfield-architects-olympic-ice-rink-milan_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena by David Chipperfield Architects \" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The building&#8217;s facade is surrounded in bands of aluminium cladding<\/p>\n<p>The photos were taken during a test event for the Olympics on 9 January, amidst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/09\/david-chipperfield-ice-hockey-arena-complete-winter-olympics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concerns that the area would not be fully completed in time for the opening of the games<\/a>.
