{"id":306620,"date":"2026-01-27T18:54:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T18:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/306620\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T18:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T18:54:07","slug":"chinas-consumer-spending-push-faces-major-challenge-debt-averse-households","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/306620\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s consumer spending push faces major challenge \u2013 debt-averse households"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese households have accelerated deleveraging \u2013 cutting debt relative to gross domestic product \u2013 at the fastest pace in years, a shift that could weigh on the consumer spending that Beijing needs to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/china-business\/article\/3341239\/china-needs-silver-and-young-spenders-plus-policy-support-consumption-growth-hsbc?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sustain growth<\/a> in the world\u2019s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The household debt-to-GDP ratio fell by 2 percentage points, from 61.4 per cent in 2024 to 59.4 per cent at the end of 2025, according to data released on Monday by the National Institution for Finance and Development (NIFD), a Beijing-based think tank.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Household sector debt expanded by just 0.5 per cent year on year in 2025, marking a historic low. The size of the debt dropped by 0.1 per cent in the third quarter and by 0.8 per cent in the fourth quarter \u2013 the first quarterly declines since 1995.<\/p>\n<p>After soft retail sales and weak consumer confidence <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3336515\/china-issues-11-point-policy-package-boost-consumer-spending-amid-slowing-retail-sales?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weighed on the economy<\/a> last year, Beijing faces mounting pressure to boost domestic demand amid a protracted property slump, high youth unemployment, trade war uncertainties and a rapidly ageing population. Yet while household deleveraging can strengthen financial stability, it can also restrain consumer spending.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The household sector was the only one to report a fall in the debt-to-GDP ratio in 2025<strong data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa17\">.<\/strong> Central and local authorities increased their debt-to-GDP ratios by 3.7 percentage points and 3.8 percentage points, respectively, as the government adopted a more proactive fiscal policy.
