LONDON (AP) \u2014 Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s politically charged action thriller \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d<\/a> leads the race for the British Academy Film Awards, securing 14 nominations Tuesday including acting nods for five of its cast.<\/p>\n

Ryan Coogler\u2019s blues-steeped vampire epic \u201cSinners\u201d<\/a> is close behind with 13 nominations for Britain\u2019s equivalent of the Oscars, while Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s Shakespearean family tragedy \u201cHamnet\u201d<\/a> and Josh Safdie\u2019s ping-pong odyssey \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d<\/a> have 11 apiece.<\/p>\n

Guillermo del Toro\u2019s reimagining of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d<\/a> and Norwegian family drama \u201c Sentimental Value\u201d<\/a> each got eight nominations, rounding out a six-pack of leading contenders for both the British and Hollywood Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

The best film nominees are \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d \u201cHamnet,\u201d \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d<\/p>\n

BAFTA Chief Executive Jane Millichip said the nominations recognized \u201cfilms like \u2018One Battle After Another,\u2019 \u2018Sinners,\u2019 tackling really big societal issues \u2014 the moral ambiguity of activism, Black identity,\u201d alongside films exploring \u201cthe most intimate side of family relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all doing it in quite different ways: Strong flavors, really bold storytelling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Hollywood heavyweights and rising stars<\/p>\n

Best leading actor contenders are Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet for \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Leonardo DiCaprio for \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Ethan Hawke for Broadway biopic \u201cBlue Moon,\u201d Michael B. Jordan for \u201cSinners\u201d and Jesse Plemons for \u201cBugonia\u201d and British actor Robert Aramayo for playing a man with Tourette\u2019s syndrome in biographical drama \u201cI Swear.\u201d <\/p>\n

Aramayo said it was \u201creally crazy\u201d to be nominated alongside Hollywood heavyweights. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely amazing,\u201d he said. \u201cI admire each and every one of them so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

The leading actress category includes awards-season favorite Jessie Buckley for her performance as Agnes Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, in \u201cHamnet.\u201d She\u2019s up against Rose Byrne for \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You,\u201d Kate Hudson for \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d Chase Infiniti for \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Renate Reinsve for \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Emma Stone for dystopian tragicomedy \u201cBugonia.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cOne Battle\u201d actors Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn are all nominated for supporting performances.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press was recognized in the best documentary category with a nomination for Mstyslav Chernov\u2019s harrowing Ukraine war portrait \u201c2000 Meters to Andriivka,\u201d<\/a> co-produced by the AP and PBS Frontline. <\/p>\n

The winners will be announced at a Feb. 22 ceremony in London hosted by actor Alan Cumming. The U.K. prizes \u2014 officially called the EE BAFTA Film Awards \u2014 often provide clues about who will triumph at Hollywood\u2019s Academy Awards, held this year on March 15.<\/p>\n

This year, unusually, Oscar nominations were announced first, with \u201cSinners\u201d securing a record 16 nominations<\/a>, followed by 13 for \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n

The British academy has recognized several performers overlooked by the Oscars, including supporting actor nominees Paul Mescal for \u201cHamnet\u201d and Odessa A\u2019zion for \u201cMarty Supreme.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BAFTAs also have a distinctly British accent, with a separate category of best British film. Its 10 nominees include \u201cThe Ballad of Wallis Island,\u201d \u201cPillion,\u201d \u201cI Swear\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Basden, co-writer and star of \u201cThe Ballad of Wallis Island,\u201d the story of a musical duo reluctantly reunited by a superfan, said it was gratifying to receive three nominations for a movie filmed on a tiny budget in 18 days. Carey Mulligan, who spent 10 days on set, is nominated for best supporting actress.<\/p>\n

\u201cSort of against the odds, we managed to create something in those conditions that we\u2019re really proud of and that\u2019s really hit home with people,\u201d Basden said. \u201cSo it\u2019s a lovely kind of underdog story in many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

In search of diversity<\/p>\n

Most BAFTA winners are chosen by 8,500 members of the U.K. academy of industry professionals, with one \u2013 the Rising Star Award \u2013 selected by public vote from a shortlist of nominees. This year\u2019s rising star contenders are Infiniti, Aramayo, \u201cSinners\u201d star Miles Caton and British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.<\/p>\n

Like other major movie awards, Britain\u2019s film academy has introduced changes in recent years to increase diversity, including the addition of a longlist round before the final nominees are selected. Diversity has improved since 2020, when no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running, and all 20 of the main acting nominees were white. <\/p>\n

Still, Zhao is the only female nominee in the best director category, alongside Anderson, Safdie, Coogler, Yorgos Lanthimos for \u201cBugonia\u201d and Joachim Trier for \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d Across all categories including documentaries and shorts, 25% of the directing nominees are women.<\/p>\n
