{"id":308055,"date":"2026-01-28T13:41:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T13:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/308055\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T13:41:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T13:41:11","slug":"jury-shown-cctv-footage-of-schoolboy-before-he-went-missing-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/308055\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury shown CCTV footage of schoolboy before he went missing \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The jury in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/noah-donohoe\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/noah-donohoe\/\">Noah Donohoe<\/a> inquest has watched CCTV footage of the schoolboy cycling naked in the moments before he went missing in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inquest also heard from one of Noah\u2019s classmates, who said he had had no concerns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\">mental health<\/a> of his school friend at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Noah was 14 when he was found dead in a storm drain in north <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a> in June 2020, six days after leaving home on his bike to meet two friends to travel to the Cavehill area outside the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inquest is examining the circumstances around the schoolboy\u2019s disappearance and death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday afternoon, the inquest was shown nine minutes of non-continuous footage of Noah on the evening he went missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is first seen leaving his apartment block in Fitzroy Avenue with his bike, wearing a cycling helmet and a backpack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Through a series of clips, he is then seen cycling through the city centre and then towards the north of the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the final clip, the last footage of Noah before he disappeared, he is seen riding the bike naked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The jury then heard evidence from a motorist who saw Noah on the same evening after he had fallen from his bike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/01\/26\/noah-donohoe-excited-for-the-future-in-days-prior-to-disappearance-friend-tells-court\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Donohoe \u2018excited\u2019 for future in days prior to disappearance, friend tells courtOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donna Blain first contacted police during the period between Noah going missing and his body being discovered, and then gave a statement 10 months after the schoolboy\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inquest heard she was driving from the Shore Road on to North Queen Street when she saw Noah, who appeared to have fallen from his bike and was lifting it back off the ground. She said she did not know what caused the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The witness told the inquest that Noah was looking around as if embarrassed before he cycled off. She said he left his coat behind on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She also said she did not see anything that gave the impression that Noah had been injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier, witness Charlie Rocks told the hearing he was Noah\u2019s \u201cclosest friend\u201d when they were pupils at St Malachy\u2019s College in Belfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cHe was the nicest, friendliest person, funniest person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rocks said Noah was the \u201csmartest kid, he was always asking questions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNoah was friendly with everyone in school. I joked with him that he knew everyone in school,\u201d he said. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t the type of person to be in the popular friend group, but he knew everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe never mentioned to me anything about storm drains or going underground or being in tunnels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf he had have been interested in these things, he would have talked about them as he would always have spoken about things that he was interested in throughout lockdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe appeared to be upbeat and was looking forward to ending lockdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe never appeared to be down or depressed, and only mentioned once to me that he was feeling blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Counsel to the coroner, Peter Coll KC, asked Mr Rocks if he had had any concerns about Noah\u2019s state of mind before he went missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rocks said: \u201cNoah is very eccentric as a person, and I think some of the last conversations we had before he passed were certainly eccentric. I think that was because of the transitional period he was going through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut in terms of immediate concern, I had none at the time, and even looking back on it now, I still don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inquest was shown a series of social media messages between Noah, Mr Rocks and another friend \u2013 Jay Tierney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rocks told the inquest that he believed Noah had become \u201cmore open\u201d about his mental health during the Covid lockdown period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cHe was starting to grow up and think more about his emotions. He was definitely changing, which was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/01\/22\/noah-donohoe-inquest-his-moods-have-been-so-out-of-character-mother-told-police-on-phone\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Donohoe inquest: \u2018His moods have been so out of character,\u2019 mother told police on phoneOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rocks told the hearing that Noah had asked him if he wanted to read the self-help book 12 Rules for Life, by the author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jordan-peterson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jordan-peterson\/\">Jordan Peterson<\/a>, but that he had declined to read it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under questioning from barrister for the PSNI, Donal Lunny, Mr Rocks said he had been unaware that Noah had occasionally stayed overnight alone in his Belfast apartment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Barrister for Fiona Donohoe, Brenda Campbell KC, asked Mr Rocks if he had ever known Noah to struggle with his sexuality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He responded: \u201cHe was straight from what I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court was shown messages between Noah and Mr Rocks when they both discussed liking the same girl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rocks said: \u201cI was just a teenager and so was he.
