Mariah Carey<\/a> might just be our most fabulous living legend. You’d expect nothing less from the multi-Grammy award winner<\/a>, who showed up to shoot her Life Lessons video in a pair of Fendi pyjamas. “If I’m not going on stage or doing something else like that I’d rather just wear pyjamas,” Carey says. “Is that fabulous or bleak?” <\/p>\n

Over the decades, the singer has cultivated a distinctive persona<\/a> that often precedes her. From her opulent jewellery collection (“I don’t know how many diamonds [I wear] on a particular day”) to her entourage of dogs \u2014 Cha Cha, Mutley and Jellybean \u2014 which come with her wherever she goes, life doesn’t get more fabulous than Mariah Carey.<\/p>\n

But with the expectations that surround the industry’s most-loved (and self-confessed) “diva” comes the pressure to always be ‘on’. She’s forgiven then, for enjoying the small moments in the downtime she does manage to steal away. Her favourite vices include taking a hot bath with her favourite ylang ylang scent; “For me that’s pampering myself because there’s no-one else around and I’m just there enjoying the moment and not having to think about anything else.”<\/p>\n

Carey is a welcome reprieve from the incessant social media churn of 5am morning routines and cryo-chamber CEO fanatics \u2014 you could say she’s the original ‘slow living’ influencer; “I don’t like mornings,” she tells Bazaar plainly. “Unless I have to get up and do something for work, I’m not out of bed until the afternoon [at] the earliest.” She loves being comfortable while she’s at home, leaning heavily into her aforementioned love of a “fabulous pyjama ensemble” when she’s not donning a custom-made swimsuit for her hot tub, of course. Relatability might not be the first thing you notice about the singer’s life, but wouldn’t we all live like Carey if we could?<\/p>\n

Bespoke bathing suits aside, sharing her success with loved ones brings Carey joy. She enjoys Christmas (naturally), spending it surrounded by her family and showering her twins Moroccan and Monroe with gifts, something that she missed out on in her own childhood; “I didn’t have that when I was little, not everybody has that so it’s really nice to be able to do that now.”<\/p>\n

Out of the spotlight, the singer prefers to keep things pared-back. Her skincare advice is unpretentious and to-the-point; she places emphasis on taking care of her skin, enjoying a mask at night-time and avoiding sun exposure. “I think I got that from watching Oprah Winfrey when I was growing up,” she says.<\/p>\n

Aside from her favourite designers (“If I love a certain dress, usually it’s Tom Ford”), Carey possesses the same pragmatic attitude when it comes to her wardrobe; “I think keeping it simple is something that I learned early on and I try to go along that path,” she shares.

That said, no-one comes between the superstar and her covetable trove of jewels; “Haters say that there’s too many diamonds \u2014 if they are haters then it’s because they want them.” She treasures her sentimental pieces beyond their glitzy facade, including a diamond-encrusted butterfly ring gifted to her by Van Cleef & Arpels; “I’ve had it for years and years,” she says. “It was kind of a difficult time in my life, it was so sweet that they did that and so I always wear it.” <\/p>\n

“Haters” and criticism is something that Carey has had to deal with her whole career, sometimes even from those closest to her, as she shared in her Bazaar cover interview<\/a>. But after more than 30 years in the entertainment industry, the singer has learnt to be unperturbed. “If people wanted to sit around and critique me then that’s pretty boring for them,” she says. “They have very pretty boring lives.” Carey may be many things, but boring is not one of them.<\/p>\n
