Schools across the country have been waiting for permission to go to tender on projects, with many waiting years for sign-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> TD Malcolm Byrne said that there was one school in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\/\">Co Wexford<\/a> and three in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\">Co Wicklow<\/a> included in the list, \u201cbut 10 in the minister\u2019s home county of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\">Galway<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m looking at schools like Bunclody Community College who\u2019ve been waiting years and they\u2019re not being included in the list,\u201c he told The Irish Times. \u201dI don\u2019t know what the criteria is that\u2019s being used, but if you\u2019re from the Minister\u2019s home county, that seems to be getting priority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u20ac1.6 billion investment figure represents the first tranche of an overall \u20ac7.55 billion education package under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-development-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-development-plan\/\">National Development Plan (NDP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Byrne said the reasons for some schools being selected ahead of others was not clear. He added: \u201cI get every school can\u2019t go ahead at the same time, but the criteria is not clear . . . My argument is that decisions should be on the basis of need. I do find this rather bizarre. Why are 10 per cent of the schools in Co Galway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Naughton\u2019s spokeswoman has been contacted for comment in response to Mr Byrne\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Naughton, a Fine Gael TD, announced the NDP investment plans at Powerstown Educate Together National School in Dublin on Wednesday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the announcement, she was asked about 10 of the 105 projects being located in Co Galway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cThere are a number of counties where there is a large number of schools listed,\u201d she replied. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor example, in Kildare, which would be a large commuter area.
