Whether it\u2019s a small part or a big part he [has] still put the same research in, the same effort and [given] it his best shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Mike was born in Hull after his father escaped Spain\u2019s Basque region during the country\u2019s civil war, and began working on fishing boats in Milford Haven and then Humberside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThere is no more grounded, humble person than Robert,\u201d Mike said. \u201cHe is just from a normal, working-class family from Hull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Robert has two sisters, Laura, 35, who is a midwife, and Charleigh, 27, who is doing a degree in social work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">His double Bafta nomination \u2014 he is also in contention for its Rising Star award, which members of the public can vote for until February 12 \u2014 comes amid continuing concern that success in the performing arts is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/art\/article\/the-uk-arts-scene-will-soon-be-no-go-for-all-but-the-monied-middle-classes-qb0s8m0w0?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfM4asK2sIuqiYsEA59Pcy_lPiTSySMUrHXRi9AmVHuuA-KVkQfMEpZ0n3ugO0%3D&amp;gaa_ts=697a3a1c&amp;gaa_sig=F5E08mEr6yICHcERJUAsJn0sCPWsrsg_owGg_Wq8lCr4O00FEqtXEmrtVkd-ZcKGKYteRUj7xuxD3SN7hdcavQ%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly the preserve of the privately educated<\/a> given the downgrading of arts within state schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/education\/article\/end-untold-damage-of-state-school-arts-cuts-artists-plead-d6qkcgvjg?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfKQcvGciN97csP-55uNGV3ILnIt-LI2aKPGVqBgYdQzXWpz8QwYxvlNwc77tQ%3D&amp;gaa_ts=697a3c3c&amp;gaa_sig=vJfQMEhsjYthbRlgsomZR98GkGgRyzulj_sFGZpQaFm8ZpMADmjad6cTGsV6VPdf5awZ9FpwLeKnR5YhI-PmUw%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>End \u2018untold damage\u2019 of state school arts cuts, artists plead<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Aramayo\u2019s mother, Lisa, 59, said they had needed to \u201cgather\u201d money from family and friends to allow him to study in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cOne day he came home from school and said: \u2018I really want to study in America, can you help me?\u2019 We couldn\u2019t afford it. Neither of us had any money at the time. We did a bit of gathering and family and friends put in money to get him there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cFortunately Robert\u2019s dad\u2019s circumstances changed and he weighed in with quite a bit of funding after that but initially we were: \u2018Okay, he has earned his place but how can we make it work?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She added that it had not been easy for her son to secure success at first. \u201cHe had quite a lot of knock-backs initially and he would say: \u2018I will use this to spur me on, it drives me on\u2019. He is just so positive. He won\u2019t let anything grind him down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Mike, who has worked for Buoyant Upholstery for 26 years, and eventually became managing director, said he thought his son had the talent and attitude to \u201cultimately become a household name\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cHe is so versatile and loves a challenge,\u201d Mike said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt is bonkers, really bonkers,\u201d Lisa said of her son\u2019s success. \u201cWe are just normal, very unremarkable people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWell, Robert is remarkable,\u201d she added with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI just hope we can get a ticket for it,\u201d she said of the Bafta ceremony on February 22 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Mike added: \u201cI just hope that I\u2019m there somewhere.
