{"id":308816,"date":"2026-01-28T23:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T23:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/308816\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T23:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T23:18:09","slug":"tributes-paid-to-roscommon-born-officer-killed-in-british-army-training-incident-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/308816\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes paid to Roscommon-born officer killed in British Army training incident \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roscommon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roscommon\/\">Roscommon<\/a>-born <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/british-army\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/british-army\/\">British army<\/a> officer was killed in a live training exercise on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Capt Philip Gilbert Muldowney (25) from Ballinameen near Boyle died during the exercise at an army training site in Northumberland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The officer served as a fire support commander in the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Capt Muldowney is the son of David and Meg Muldowney from Ballinameen in Boyle. He was educated at the Elphin Community College. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His father is a deacon in the parish of St Attracta and St Brigid in Ballinameen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Local parish priest Fr Lawrence Ebuk said: \u201cEveryone is devastated and shocked. The family are well known in the community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPhilip was a very gentle and humble guy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The UK Ministry of Defence said Muldowney was an \u201cimmensely enthusiastic officer who embraced life with a vigour that inspired those around him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Muldowney joined the British army on January 5th, 2020, and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in December that year after attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A British army spokesperson said: \u201cThe circumstances surrounding Capt Muldowney\u2019s death are being investigated, and it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The officer had served in multiple roles across the force, including being deployed to Estonia in November 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was previously seriously injured while undertaking a commando course at Lympstone, East Devon, in January 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Muldowney later completed the fire support team commanders\u2019 course at the Royal School of Artillery after pausing to rehabilitate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tributes have been made by military personnel who served alongside Muldowney, describing him as being \u201chighly authentic\u201d and \u201cunapologetically himself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commanding officer of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, Lt Col Henry Waller, said: \u201cIt is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Capt Philip Gilbert Muldowney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAlways full of ideas and never without a bright smile, Gilbert approached every challenge wholeheartedly, whether in camp or out in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Waller described Muldowney as \u201can outstanding officer who consistently put his soldiers first\u201d, adding that he was a \u201crising star\u201d within the army and the regiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHis leadership, courage and sense of duty earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe had an extraordinary ability to lift spirits and make the best of any situation, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The commanding officer said the army\u2019s thoughts and prayers were with Muldowney\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Capt Helen Brackenbury said Muldowney was a \u201ctruly kind person\u201d who was \u201chighly competent and endearingly joyful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added: \u201cIt has been the pleasure of my career to have served alongside him, and I consider myself very lucky to have been his friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Funeral details for Capt Muldowney have yet to be made. \u2013 Additional reporting agencies <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/28\/ban-on-use-of-scramblers-in-public-places-being-planned-by-government\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ban on use of scramblers in public places being planned by GovernmentOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Roscommon-born British army officer was killed in a live training exercise on Sunday.
