{"id":30916,"date":"2025-08-29T14:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T14:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/30916\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T14:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T14:38:08","slug":"john-cleese-confirms-fawlty-towers-sequel-stage-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/30916\/","title":{"rendered":"John Cleese confirms Fawlty Towers sequel stage play\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/john-cleese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">John Cleese<\/a> has revealed he is working on a sequel stage production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/fawlty-towers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fawlty Towers<\/a> following the success of the sitcom\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/west-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">West End<\/a> revival.<\/p>\n<p>The 85-year-old comedy legend brought the BBC classic back to life last year with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/showbiz\/celebrity-news\/john-cleese-shaftesbury-avenue-apollo-theatre-london-west-end-b1222515.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Fawlty Towers: The Play<\/a>, which has been running to packed houses since its debut. <\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/culture\/film\/john-cleese-european-michael-palin-fish-radio-times-b1236976.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleese has confirmed<\/a> he is developing a follow-up, built around three further episodes from the show.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/lifestyle\/john-cleese-spouse-divorce-advice-lorraine-b1222581.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleese explained<\/a>: \u201cIn the West End, we took favourites such as Mrs Richards, The Germans and The Food Inspectors and put those together to make the show.  <\/p>\n<p>Cleese confirmed the new stage production would not run concurrently with the existing play, but suggested fans could expect it to launch within the next 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cBut it has been so successful that I said, &#8216;Let&#8217;s put together three other shows.&#8217; There is no reason we cannot do it again but we wouldn\u2019t want to have it on at the same time so maybe in a year and a half\u2019s time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/14180850-c6db4f8d-bf5c-45eb-a2ed-894a28562ef4.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/>Cleese with the cast of Fawlty Towers: The Play (James Manning\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The new play will draw on material from The Psychiatrist, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/basil-fawlty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Basil Fawlty<\/a> is caught in an awkward moment after accidentally groping a guest while reaching for a light switch. The Kipper and the Corpse, in which staff attempt to conceal a dead body and Basil the Rat, featuring Manuel\u2019s wayward pet rodent.<\/p>\n<p>The original production adapted Cleese\u2019s 1970s scripts with minimal changes, despite ongoing debate over whether older comedies should carry content warnings. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/showbiz\/john-cleese-basil-fawlty-west-indies-monty-python-god-b1155377.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleese criticised what he called \u201cliteral-minded people\u201d<\/a> for misunderstanding comedy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever you&#8217;re doing comedy you&#8217;re up against the literal-minded, and the literal-minded don&#8217;t understand irony,\u201d he said. \u201cThat means if you take them seriously, you get rid of a lot of comedy.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe literal-minded don&#8217;t understand metaphor and don&#8217;t understand irony and they don&#8217;t understand comic exaggeration. The result is if you listen to them, people who are not understanding of what other human beings are saying and doing, they&#8217;re not playing with a full deck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding: \u201cLiteral-minded people can only have one interpretation of what&#8217;s being said and that&#8217;s the literal-minded one.
