Kurt Russell has defended Taylor Sheridan\u2019s writing against criticism that the cowboy creator<\/a> over-sexualizes his female characters.<\/p>\n

The actor, who stars on Sheridan\u2019s newest Western series The Madison, praised Sheridan\u2019s work as \u201ccompelling\u201d and described the upcoming family drama as \u201cfemale-gaze-oriented\u201d in a recent interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that it’s a very different show for Taylor in that it’s a very female-gaze-oriented show. And I think it’s extremely well written, it was fun to play. It was really fun to do. I just had a good time,\u201d Russell, 74, told Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Madison, a modern day spin-off of Sheridan\u2019s hit show Yellowstone<\/a>, follows the Clyburn family as they move from New York City to Montana following a tragedy. Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett, Matthew Fox<\/a>, Patrick J. Adams and Will Arnett star in the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a smart show,\u201d Russell<\/a> told the outlet. \u201cHe’s a really good writer \u2014 Taylor’s excellent, and Michelle’s great, and she’s really great in this show. Talking about awards \u2014 I think they’re going to be looking Michelle’s way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell\u2019s glowing remarks come after years of criticism over how women are portrayed in Sheridan\u2019s series, which include Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923 as well as Mayor of Kingstown and Landman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

People who have watched the show have argued that the prolific writer relies on degrading tropes when it comes to his female characters, who are typically viewed as over-sexualized and one-dimensional add-ons to male-centric plots.<\/p>\n

EW\u2019s review<\/a> of Landman was titled, \u201cMan, does this new Taylor Sheridan drama hate women.\u201d Salon<\/a> culture editor Kelly McClure wrote: \u201cAs a general rule, if there\u2019s a woman on screen during Yellowstone, she\u2019s either fighting, f***ing, crying, or yelling. I guess that\u2019s the cowboy way?\u201d Reddit<\/a> is filled with complaints about the depictions, with one popular post simply titled, \u201cI\u2019m convinced Taylor Sheridan doesn\u2019t like women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan also came under scrutiny when he cast supermodel Bella Hadid as the girlfriend of his own minor character <\/a>during a controversial 2024 episode of Yellowstone.<\/p>\n

Landman actor Ali Larter responded to the complaints about her character\u2019s sexualization <\/a>by telling The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>last June, \u201cNobody’s putting me in a position that I’m not comfortable being in. I have two children. I’ve been married for 19 years. I love playing this character. If there was something I was uncomfortable with, I wouldn’t do it. What’s more uncomfortable is that people are so uncomfortable by their sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that Sheridan writes \u201cwomen in their prime, that were still allowed to be alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly Reilly also defended her iconic character <\/a>by saying that viewers were \u201cvery critical\u201d of her role at the start of the show \u201cbecause she is unapologetic, out there, flawed, damaged and brave,\u201d she said. She added, \u201cWomen are always asked to play strong role model types, while men can play the gnarliest characters and get away with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
