Based on last year\u2019s figures, each city\u2019s economic size is comparable to that of a smaller European country, such as Sweden or Belgium.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In this explainer, the Post examines economic data from both megacities, breaking down what has sustained their growth and how policymakers are positioning them for the next stage of development.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa17\">What sustained the economic growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In 2025, both Beijing and Shanghai posted GDP growth of 5.4 per cent, beating the national average of 5 per cent, according to official data released on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In Beijing, growth was driven mainly by the information, software and IT services sector and finance, which together accounted for 51.8 per cent of GDP and contributed more than 80 per cent of overall growth, according to the city\u2019s statistics bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing also showed strong momentum in the national capital, with double-digit growth in electric vehicle output and a 47.6 per cent rise in <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3331343\/chinas-industrial-robot-production-overtakes-2024-levels-amid-automation-drive?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">service robot production<\/a>. The city accounted for about one-third of China\u2019s humanoid robotics industry by August, according to Beijing\u2019s mayor, Yin Yong.
