Impermeable grey clouds have hung in the sky for weeks now (no, that\u2019s not a metaphor for global politics). And with each gloomy day the Irish obsession with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-ireland\/\">weather<\/a> has reached new heights.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When I lived in sunnier climes, I was often taken by surprise when other nationalities would stare blankly in response to \u201clovely day, isn\u2019t it?\u201d. Lines would appear across their brows in puzzlement, as if to say \u201cyes, of course the sun is out\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But this January the meteorological misery has permeated almost every conversation here: through the spikes of broken umbrellas at the school gates and from under flyaway hair fuzz in the office. We were \u201cpelted on, lashed on, sopping, drowned, drenched to the skin\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And most of all, we craved the feeling of warm sunlight on our faces. We asked \u201cwill we ever see the sun again?\u201d (with Google searches for Ryanair and Aer Lingus up 30% this month in Ireland, many now have their answer).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of writing, there have been a total of 1.5 hours of sunshine recorded at Dublin Airport weather station over the past week, that includes four days with zero sunshine. And this was even before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/01\/28\/major-clean-up-operation-under-way-after-storm-chandra-flooding\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/01\/28\/major-clean-up-operation-under-way-after-storm-chandra-flooding\/\">Storm Chandra<\/a> brought devastating flooding to homes and businesses particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\">Wicklow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\/\">Wexford<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When I asked Irish people living abroad in recent weeks what they don\u2019t miss about home, the weather cropped up over and over: from sideways rain to its unpredictability. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/06\/under-the-weight-of-the-grey-limerick-sky-i-realise-theres-no-coming-home\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/06\/under-the-weight-of-the-grey-limerick-sky-i-realise-theres-no-coming-home\/\">For Irishman Ray Farrell, living in Australia for 40 years<\/a>, it was the weather on a visit to Limerick one \u201cdismal February\u201d which made him \u201crealise there was no coming home\u201d. \u201cSitting in a coffee shop with my brother Joe, I look across the car park into the gloom. There is a weight in the greyness of the sky that I had forgotten.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For Australian Annalisa Cercone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/01\/but-the-weather-an-aussie-voluntarily-moving-to-ireland-seemed-ludicrous-to-many\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/01\/but-the-weather-an-aussie-voluntarily-moving-to-ireland-seemed-ludicrous-to-many\/\">the weather made many think she was ludicrous to come<\/a> and live in Ireland. \u201cBut the weather!\u201d they said. \u201cWhy would anyone trade those blue skies for such grey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Just don\u2019t look across the Atlantic for distraction from the pelting rain, for great storm clouds approach here, as orange thunderclaps threaten to take over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\">Greenland<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-shooting-deepens-us-immigration-crisis-as-federal-accounts-are-challenged\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-shooting-deepens-us-immigration-crisis-as-federal-accounts-are-challenged\/\">Ice showers crackdown on immigrants<\/a> at a large scale. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/05\/irish-therapist-in-us-i-comfort-my-clients-trump-regime-anxiety-but-i-am-preparing-to-leave\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/05\/irish-therapist-in-us-i-comfort-my-clients-trump-regime-anxiety-but-i-am-preparing-to-leave\/\">Irish therapist living in the United States writes about how his gay and immigrant clients<\/a> were growing more and more anxious in Trump\u2019s America. \u201cI have a tin sign in my office with that Seneca quote on it, and I look at it every day: \u2018We suffer more in imagination than we do in reality\u2019. Nice words, comforting words, challenging words, but even I know they are just words, and words often can\u2019t stop or delay the inevitable. So yes, I too am preparing to leave the US after living here for more than two decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even in sunny Perth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/12\/an-irishwoman-in-australia-i-always-felt-safe-here-since-bondi-i-check-for-escape-routes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/12\/an-irishwoman-in-australia-i-always-felt-safe-here-since-bondi-i-check-for-escape-routes\/\">where Irish doctor Elizabeth Ahern-Flynn is enjoying summer<\/a> surfing at Scarborough beach, there is darkness in the wake of December\u2019s Bondi attacks on the other side of Australia. \u201cAs I walked the foreshore, I suddenly found myself glancing at various access points a car could use to mow down pedestrians, the escape routes I could take were an attack to happen in my beloved beachside suburb.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But there is hope as the traditional Irish (and not the meteorological) Spring begins in the coming days, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-brigid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-brigid\/\">St Brigid\u2019s Day<\/a>. The evenings are getting brighter too. The sunset in January moved from 4.17pm to 5.06pm, and will be 6pm by the end of February. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/26\/i-just-booked-a-flight-there-one-day-wicklow-artist-on-life-in-ho-chi-minh-city\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2026\/01\/26\/i-just-booked-a-flight-there-one-day-wicklow-artist-on-life-in-ho-chi-minh-city\/\">Cian Duggan an Irish artist in Vietnam<\/a>, who spoke to me in a dark Ho Chi Minh City at 6pm his time, noted how little the sunset time varies there through the year. Duggan who has just opened a solo exhibition \u201ckind of fell in love instantly with the place\u201d.
