Hundreds of thousands of people lost power across the South as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/weather\/news\/2026-01-25-live-updates-january-25-winter-storm-fern\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/weather\/news\/2026-01-25-live-updates-january-25-winter-storm-fern\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ice pulled down tree branches and power lines<\/a>, more than a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/source\/crh\/snowmap.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/source\/crh\/snowmap.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">foot of snow fell<\/a> in parts of the Midwest and Northeast, and many states faced bitter cold that was expected to linger for days.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d7e189cc-223e-4309-9f8b-c427c9d305f4-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The sudden blast may have come as a shock to many Americans after a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-western-us-is-in-a-snow-drought-and-storms-have-been-making-it-worse-272549\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-western-us-is-in-a-snow-drought-and-storms-have-been-making-it-worse-272549\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mostly mild start to winter<\/a>, but that warmth may have partly contributed to the ferocity of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"92661e5f-d13e-49ec-bea4-b5352937a22f\">As <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=kc2doosAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=kc2doosAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">atmospheric<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=qWV-WIQAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=qWV-WIQAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">climate scientists<\/a>, we conduct research that aims to improve understanding of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39850-next-generation-goes-weather-satellite-launch.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39850-next-generation-goes-weather-satellite-launch.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39850-next-generation-goes-weather-satellite-launch.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme weather<\/a>, including what makes it more or less likely to occur and how climate change might or might not play a role.<\/p>\n<p>To understand what Americans are experiencing with this winter blast, we need to look more than 20 miles above the surface of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, to the stratospheric polar vortex.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-bdf72788-7b25-4ac9-9273-d9bb1fb0d1af\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What creates a severe winter storm like this?<\/p>\n<p id=\"62583b6f-15de-497a-b490-9569ad1a9a2d\">Multiple weather factors have to come together to produce such a large and severe storm.<\/p>\n<p>Winter storms typically develop where there are sharp temperature contrasts near the surface and a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/jetstream\/global\/jet-stream\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/jetstream\/global\/jet-stream\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">southward dip in the jet stream<\/a>, the narrow band of fast-moving air that steers weather systems. If there is a substantial source of moisture, the storms can produce heavy rain or snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>In late January, a strong Arctic air mass from the north was creating the temperature contrast with warmer air from the south. (Image credit: National Weather Service)<a id=\"elk-a29affe6-d40f-41ce-bb6c-2b044b23da94\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Where does the polar vortex come in?<\/p>\n<p id=\"bcf30bab-6901-4876-854f-7ddc89681772\">The fastest winds of the jet stream occur just below the top of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/8596-earth-colorful-atmospheric-layers-photographed-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/8596-earth-colorful-atmospheric-layers-photographed-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/8596-earth-colorful-atmospheric-layers-photographed-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">troposphere<\/a>, which is the lowest level of the atmosphere and ends about seven miles above Earth&#8217;s surface. Weather systems are capped at the top of the troposphere, because the atmosphere above it becomes very stable.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stratosphere-parachute-jump-woman-skydive\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stratosphere-parachute-jump-woman-skydive\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stratosphere-parachute-jump-woman-skydive\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stratosphere<\/a> is the next layer up, from about seven miles to about 30 miles. While the stratosphere extends high above weather systems, it can still interact with them through atmospheric waves that move up and down in the atmosphere. (Image credit: National Weather Service)<\/p>\n<p id=\"61877974-7b90-400a-8c8b-3ab6da13a7bf\">You&#8217;ve probably heard the term &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43176-polar-vortex-freezing-cold-from-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43176-polar-vortex-freezing-cold-from-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43176-polar-vortex-freezing-cold-from-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polar vortex<\/a>&#8221; used when an area of cold Arctic air moves far enough southward to influence the United States. That term describes air circulating around the pole, but it can refer to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/bams\/98\/1\/bams-d-15-00212.1.xml\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/bams\/98\/1\/bams-d-15-00212.1.xml\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two different circulations<\/a>, one in the troposphere and one in the stratosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Hemisphere <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250117041847\/https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/understanding-arctic-polar-vortex\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250117041847\/https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/understanding-arctic-polar-vortex\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stratospheric polar vortex<\/a> is a belt of fast-moving air circulating around the North Pole. It is like a second jet stream, high above the one you may be familiar with from weather graphics, and usually less wavy and closer to the pole.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the stratospheric polar vortex can stretch southward over the United States. Under the right conditions, that energy can <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=space_us_8136546298916647371&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41612-018-0054-4&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fearth%2Fhow-earths-atmosphere-and-climate-come-together-to-create-a-polar-vortex\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41612-018-0054-4\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41612-018-0054-4&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fearth%2Fhow-earths-atmosphere-and-climate-come-together-to-create-a-polar-vortex\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">bounce off the polar vortex back down into the troposphere<\/a>, exaggerating the north-south swings of the jet stream across North America and making severe winter weather more likely.<\/p>\n<p>This is what was happening in late January 2026 in the central and eastern U.S.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-48a8953b-d5a1-4c91-b85f-bc6f9808bf60\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>If the climate is warming, why are we still getting severe winter storms?<\/p>\n<p id=\"2436e74e-a9d7-4d37-b997-e6f1d8516778\">Earth is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unequivocally warming<\/a> as human activities release <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/greenhouse-effect.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/greenhouse-effect.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/greenhouse-effect.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greenhouse gas emissions <\/a>that trap heat in the atmosphere, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-9\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">snow amounts are decreasing overall<\/a>. But that does not mean severe winter weather will never happen again.<\/p>\n<p>Some research suggests that even in a warming environment, cold events, while occurring less frequently, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s43247-023-01008-9\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s43247-023-01008-9\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may still remain relatively severe in some locations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One factor may be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00382-025-08011-0\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00382-025-08011-0\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increasing disruptions to the stratospheric polar vortex<\/a>, which appear to be linked to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abi9167\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abi9167\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rapid warming of the Arctic<\/a> with climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a warmer ocean leads to more evaporation, and because a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, that means more moisture is available for storms. The process of moisture condensing into rain or snow produces energy for storms as well. However, warming can also reduce the strength of storms by reducing temperature contrasts.<\/p>\n<p>The opposing effects make it complicated to assess the potential change <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=space_us_1354636609021118195&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fngeo2783&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fearth%2Fhow-earths-atmosphere-and-climate-come-together-to-create-a-polar-vortex\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ngeo2783\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fngeo2783&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fearth%2Fhow-earths-atmosphere-and-climate-come-together-to-create-a-polar-vortex\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">to average storm strength<\/a>. However, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-11\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">intense events do not necessarily change in the same way<\/a> as average events. On balance, it appears that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2510029122\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2510029122\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the most intense winter storms may be becoming more intense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A warmer environment also increases the likelihood that precipitation that would have fallen as snow in previous winters may now be more likely to fall as sleet and freezing rain.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-57dbc130-0512-48c9-8a44-6b5d28391608\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>There are still many questions<\/p>\n<p id=\"aa4400bc-f72f-43c5-ab53-d06167a5e1e2\">Scientists are constantly improving the ability to predict and respond to these severe weather events, but there are many questions still to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the data and research in the field relies on a foundation of work by federal employees, including government labs like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2026\/01\/15\/colorado-ncar-funding-john-hickenlooper-michael-bennet-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2026\/01\/15\/colorado-ncar-funding-john-hickenlooper-michael-bennet-senate\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/a>, known as NCAR, which has been targeted by the Trump administration for funding cuts. These scientists help develop the crucial models, measuring instruments and data that scientists and forecasters everywhere depend on.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-623ab9fe-f9da-407b-a407-bb17c5ff5fd5\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This article was originally published at The Conversation.
