{"id":311445,"date":"2026-01-30T11:36:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T11:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/311445\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T11:36:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T11:36:11","slug":"price-of-kerrygold-butter-cut-by-9-across-supervalu-and-centra-stores-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/311445\/","title":{"rendered":"Price of Kerrygold butter cut by 9% across SuperValu and Centra stores \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/musgrave\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/musgrave\/\">Musgrave<\/a> has cut the price of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerrygold\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerrygold\/\">Kerrygold <\/a>butter products in the latest stage of a burgeoning price war among Irish supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group said it would reduce the price of Kerrygold across its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supervalu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/supervalu\/\">Supervalu <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/centra\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/centra\/\">Centra <\/a>stores by 9 per cent from Friday. The reductions will deliver savings of between 30 cent and 50 cent and will see a pound of Kerrygold drop from \u20ac5.49 to \u20ac4.99.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe recognise that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">household budgets<\/a> continue to be under pressure and are committed to passing on savings to customers,\u201d the company said. \u201cBy working closely with our suppliers, we aim to deliver value where possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Musgrave last month became the first supermarket group to announce a series of cuts across its butters, with cuts of up to 15 per cent on its SuperValu and Centra own brand butter ranges. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That was the latest step in a campaign that has seen most of the main grocers reduce price of household staples like milk and bread. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The grocery, retail and wholesale company said at that time that its reductions would deliver savings of up to 60 cent per pack on own-brand Irish butter products. It saw the price of all SuperValu and Centra one pound (454 gramme) own-brand butter products fall from \u20ac3.99 to \u20ac3.39, while its half pound (227g) packs sit at \u20ac2.09, down from \u20ac2.39. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">German discounter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aldi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aldi\/\">Aldi <\/a>responded swiftly, matching the Musgrave cut on its 454g own-brand butter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lidl\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lidl\/\">Lidl <\/a>mirrored that move and, within days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tesco\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tesco\/\">Tesco <\/a>did the same. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/12\/30\/irish-butter-wars-what-does-supermarkets-price-drop-mean-for-shoppers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What do supermarket price cuts mean for shoppers?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Musgrave has 615 Centra and 258 SuperValu stores across Ireland, the majority of which are in the Republic. In 2024, it invested \u20ac60 million in revamps of stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group also has 310 Daybreak locations in the Republic, 71 Mace shops in Northern Ireland and 91 Dialprix stores in Spain. These employ more than 44,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group \u2013 which also owns the Donnybrook Fair and Daybreak franchises \u2013 saw turnover in 2024 reach \u20ac5.2 billion, a 4 per cent increase on the previous year. It made \u20ac2.6 million in profit each week as turnover reached a new high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Cork-headquartered supermarket and wholesale group\u2019s accounts for that year, published last November, show pretax profits rose 5 per cent to \u20ac134.5 million from \u20ac116 million.
