The Saw<\/a>\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>franchise is now in the hands of Blumhouse,<\/a><\/strong> bringing franchise creators James Wan<\/strong> and Leigh Whannell<\/strong> back for the eleventh installment.<\/p>\n

The contemporary horror masters have recently gone on record<\/a> with promises to steer this IP back to its roots, even prompting unconfirmed speculation that they may return to direct at the Q&A for the special legacy screening<\/a> of their breakout 2004 hit at the Sundance Film Festival this week.<\/p>\n

While at Park City for the film\u2019s screening, Wan and Whannell spoke to Bloody Disgusting\u2019s Matt Donato<\/a> about their involvement in the upcoming eleventh installment.<\/p>\n

The pair have previously said to expect something completely different with the new film, but what exactly does that mean? Those worried it\u2019ll follow spinoff Spiral: From the Book of Saw<\/a> and bypass any involvement with Jigsaw or his complicated legacy, fret not: Wan puts those concerns to bed straightaway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I can tell you this,\u201d Wan says. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely not Spiral, it\u2019s not Spiral.<\/strong> And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it\u2019s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did have cancer, by the way,\u201d Whannell interjects.<\/p>\n

Wan concedes, \u201cThat is true. That is true. This is what I\u2019ll say. Leigh and I, we\u2019re not going to give too much away, but we don\u2019t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw.<\/strong> That\u2019s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw\u2019s philosophy and what makes him tick.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, he\u2019s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cBut so it\u2019s a really kind of like dig into that. And definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it\u2019s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn\u2019t been done before. That\u2019s the sale. That\u2019s my pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n
