{"id":31364,"date":"2025-08-29T19:11:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T19:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/31364\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T19:11:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T19:11:07","slug":"consultant-at-centre-of-review-in-droghedas-our-lady-of-lourdes-hospital-has-left-country-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/31364\/","title":{"rendered":"Consultant at centre of review in Drogheda\u2019s Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has left country \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The consultant at the centre of a review into the miscategorisation of pre-cancerous cells at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/our-lady-of-lourdes-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/our-lady-of-lourdes-hospital\/\">Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital <\/a>in Drogheda did not work at any other hospital and has since left the country, health sources have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/26\/drogheda-hospital-our-lady-of-lourdes-hospital-drogheda-patients-informed-of-mis-categorisation-of-precancerous-cells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/26\/drogheda-hospital-our-lady-of-lourdes-hospital-drogheda-patients-informed-of-mis-categorisation-of-precancerous-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported on Tuesday<\/a> that a number of patients treated at the Co Louth hospital were being told this week of the miscategorisation of pre-cancerous cells as part of open disclosure procedures in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive\/\" target=\"_blank\">Health Service Executive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The hospital said in the course of its \u201cquality assurance process\u201d, it has commissioned an independent review of all histopathology slides across various specialities in relation to one consultant, focusing on a period from February to November 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Just over 1,000 cases of patients treated at the hospital are being reviewed, and they relate to histopathology slides across various specialities. The review is halfway through completion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Histopathology involves examining tissues obtained during a biopsy or other surgical procedures, which are used to diagnose diseases, including cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis review is under way and any patients in relation to whom any findings are relevant will be contacted directly by the hospital. HSE Dublin and North East has provided necessary information to the HSE in line with the National Patient Safety Briefing Protocol,\u201d said the hospital this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several patients have been invited to meetings at the hospital under the HSE\u2019s open disclosure procedures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Furthermore, several dozen patients will receive letters from the hospital advising them that the grading of their pre-cancerous cells has been altered following a review.
