The broader S&amp;P 500 fell 0.64%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 1.15%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex7vvqt0000356nkj74jfj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the dip, the Dow, S&amp;P and Nasdaq closed August with healthy gains of 3.2%, 1.91% and 1.58%, respectively.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex8l65e0000356n3o6h9o7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow and S&amp;P 500 have posted four months of gains in a row, which is their best streak in roughly one year. The Nasdaq posted five months of gains in a row, its best streak since early 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex8mzft0002356nfzdtgsnx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stocks have rallied in recent months as trade tensions have settled, corporate earnings have come in better than expected and traders have ramped up bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in September.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex8g9h40002356nbl9v83fo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet slowing momentum in the artificial intelligence trade has weighed on markets. Dell (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/DELL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DELL<\/a>) and Marvell Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/MRVL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MRVL<\/a>), a semiconductor company, on Friday fell 8.9% and 18.6%, respectively, after reporting earnings that did not impress Wall Street.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex8iy9h0006356nhlbu8o2f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nvidia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/NVDA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NVDA<\/a>), the core of the AI trade, sank 3.36%. Nvidia posted its first losing month since March.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewzxnn4000i356n5r22oqqa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cExpectations for tech are sky high,\u201d Jay Hatfield, chief executive at Infrastructure Capital Advisors, said. \u201cThe companies have done well, but not necessarily well enough to get them to move to the next level.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewxx20d0000356n6kzzplpd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEarnings were strong, but AI-related growth outlooks showed deceleration,\u201d analysts at Citi said in a note. \u201cAll in, stocks have not broken but have clearly lost some momentum. To be fair, the breakneck pace of gains off April lows couldn\u2019t continue forever.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu4e4u000t356na6s6zqhr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wall Street on Friday also digested the latest batch of inflation data. Stock had opened lower as data showed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/29\/economy\/us-pce-consumer-spending-inflation-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Consumption Expenditures<\/a> index rose 2.6% year-over-year in July, in line with expectations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewub1af0001356n6svsr90j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred inflation gauge \u2014 a core measure of PCE that strips out volatile food and energy prices \u2014 rose 2.9% year-over-year in July. It\u2019s the hottest annual pace since February but was also in line with expectations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewuvkkw0000356nioxkxc1h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cInflation is increasing ever so slightly, but right in line with forecasts,\u201d Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Northlight Asset Management, said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewujg0d0000356n2bajtlos@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US stocks ended August on a subdued note, with relatively light trading volume ahead of the Labor Day weekend. But it\u2019s been another wild month for markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewuoykl000c356nukicjqet@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traders have braced a barrage of headlines, from a weaker-than-expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/05\/business\/jobs-report-recession-warning-sign\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jobs report<\/a>, to the implementation of President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/11\/business\/stock-market-wall-street-trump-tariffs-taco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widespread tariffs<\/a>, to his administration\u2019s attempts to oust Federal Reserve Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/29\/business\/new-criminal-referral-lisa-cook-federal-reserve\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Cook<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu2w7v000q356nazgqrlt9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And, through it all, stocks have continued to steadily rise, buoyed by hopes for Fed rate cuts, stronger-than-expected corporate earnings and slowing but stubborn confidence that an AI boom might reap big rewards for investors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewvaklz0000356n03lxiba3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 98% of the companies in the S&amp;P 500 have reported second-quarter earnings, with 81% of those companies beating Wall Street\u2019s earnings expectations, according to FactSet data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0f0006356nf2f34h82@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe US stock market is at an all-time high, thanks in part to rapid earnings growth and expectations for that to continue,\u201d James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, said in a note.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2229156550.jpg\" alt=\"About 98% of the companies in the S&amp;P 500 have reported second-quarter earnings, with 81% of beating Wall Street\u2019s expectations, according to FactSet.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewupbgm0000356npr4uqvj0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fed Chair Jerome Powell delivered remarks at a central banking forum in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, last week that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/22\/investing\/us-stock-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hinted potential rate cuts<\/a> could be on the horizon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewv359d0000356nddmj3pkj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Powell\u2019s remarks signaled concerns about a slowing labor market, investors and traders have been ecstatic about the potential for lower borrowing costs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0f0009356ngk9132ah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Russell 2000, an index of smaller companies that are more sensitive to interest rates, soared 7% this month as investors adjusted to the prospect of rate cuts as soon as September. It was the index\u2019s best month since November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex9b1a10000356nfc971aaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHistory shows that\u2019s the most sensitive place to getting a little bit of a boost if the Fed cuts,\u201d said Simeon Hyman, global investment strategist at ProShares.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0f0008356nndq9cfjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Wall Street\u2019s fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index, is trading near its lowest levels of the year, signaling relative calm and confidence in markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmexa7jla0006356nei9oa36t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P 500 on Thursday closed above 6,500 points for the first time ever. It was the benchmark index\u2019s 20th record high this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex9a25i0000356ncmv133ly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since World War II, whenever the S&amp;P has notched 20 or more all-time highs by the end of August, the index was higher by the end of the year about 90% of the time, with an average gain of 5.5%, according to Sam Stovall, chief market strategist at CFRA Research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0f000b356n4fv6vpnx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stocks\u2019 ascent to fresh records come as the Trump administration ramps up its assault on the Fed. While uncertainty lingers about the the administration\u2019s feud with Cook, it\u2019s being deliberated by the courts and investors are awaiting more clarity about what might happen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0f000e356nmobukeyd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe market is waiting and seeing how far this will go,\u201d Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at US Bank Asset Management Group, said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewxz6cx0006356n2708o4m4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe believe the subdued market response is a nod towards a potentially extended legal battle,\u201d Paul Christopher, head of global investment strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said in a note. \u201cNevertheless, the dispute likely signals the potential for larger financial market movements to come.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewxmj4j0003356nckb30rtq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gold, a haven during uncertainty, jumped roughly 1.2% on Friday. The yellow metal rose 5% this month and notched its best month since April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex9fi4e0002356n3j3hijgh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gold is also considered a hedge against inflation and can rise when investors expect the Fed to lower interest rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex93lbj0000356nyyqbhw5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWith policy now the key driver, gold remains well supported heading into September,\u201d said Joe Cavatoni, senior market strategist at the World Gold Council.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0g000q356nahnqvkuz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While stocks have floated near record highs, September could be a difficult month, according to Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial. Across the past 75 years, the S&amp;P 500 has notched an average decline of 0.7% in September, \u201cmaking it the worst performing month for stocks,\u201d Turnquist said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex98816000b356njjdln7p4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scott Wren, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said he\u2019ll be looking to buy more stocks if there is a dip.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmex99rk8000g356ndbcbftdf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re probably overdue for a pullback now, and I think that if we do get some sort of a pullback here, we\u2019ll be looking to lean more into stocks,\u201d Wren said. \u201cWe\u2019re actually hoping that we get an opportunity to pick up some equities at lower prices.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmewu9q0g000r356nbyn3ib0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It will be another month jam-packed with economic data.
