Less than a week after demanding the resignation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/intel\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/intel\">Intel<\/a> chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lip-bu-tan\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lip-bu-tan\">Lip-Bu Tan<\/a>, Trump hailed his career as \u201can amazing story\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And Intel\u2019s shares jumped on Thursday and Friday amid reports that the Trump administration had discussed an unusual move to acquire an ownership stake as part of a plan to revive the troubled US chipmaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All of this followed a meeting Trump described as \u201cvery interesting\u201d. Intel\u2019s shares, which fell after Trump accused Tan of being \u201chighly CONFLICTED\u201d over past investments in Chinese chipmakers, duly rebounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tan\u2019s initial sin? Unlike other tech chief executives, noted one Bernstein analyst, he hadn\u2019t \u201ccultivated\u201d a \u201cpersonal relationship\u201d with Trump. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Intel and Tan have learned their lesson, praising the \u201chonour\u201d of meeting Trump, his \u201cstrong leadership,\u201d and reaffirming their commitment to the \u201cAmerica First agenda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Such gestures can pay off handsomely. Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tim-cook\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tim-cook\">Tim Cook<\/a> gifted Trump a $6,000 Mac Pro in 2019 after he lowered tariffs on parts Apple needed from China, and also gave $1 million to his 2025 inauguration fund. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More recently, he presented a gold-mounted glass plaque praising Trump\u2019s \u201cleadership\u201d and was soon spared from new chip tariffs \u2013 another exercise in calculated appeasement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-zuckerberg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-zuckerberg\">Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> has pivoted from banning Trump on Facebook to describing him as \u201cbadass\u201d and championing \u201cmasculine energy\u201d in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, they pale beside Nvidia\u2019s Jensen Huang, who has lavished praise on Trump\u2019s \u201cutterly visionary\u201d tariffs and insisted: \u201cThe president has a plan &#8230; and I trust him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The lesson: in Trump\u2019s America, keeping the president\u2019s favour is as critical as any quarterly earnings target. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A warm word for Donald Trump can thaw the frostiest of corporate spats.
