For businesses facing the worst damage, total assistance of up to \u20ac100,000 may be available after an \u201cindependent professional assessment\u201d, said the Department of Enterprise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The definition of \u201csmall business\u201d for these schemes will also be updated to include those with up to 50 employees. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/30\/five-year-delay-to-rathfarnham-flood-scheme-shows-how-local-politics-can-delay-big-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/30\/five-year-delay-to-rathfarnham-flood-scheme-shows-how-local-politics-can-delay-big-projects\/\">The scheme <\/a>will be administered by the Irish Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis scheme is designed to deliver real financial relief fast, so owners can focus on reopening their doors, protecting jobs and restoring local life,\u201d said Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke. \u201cBehind every damaged premises is a person, a livelihood and a community depending on them, and our priority is to ensure support arrives quickly and helps businesses get back on their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Slaney river near Bunclody, Wexford as Met Eireann has issued an updated Status Yellow weather warning amid &#8216;uncertainty&#8217; over rain following Storm Chandra. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ministers also met senior officials at Government Buildings to discuss the flooding and future preventive measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Interim measures to resolve the danger of flooding countrywide were under way, the meeting was told. There has been significant damage to roads across the State, with some estimates putting the repair bill at up to \u20ac40 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Moreover, the Government is likely to consider classifying flood defences as critical infrastructure in future in an attempt to accelerate the planning process for vital works, which have in some cases been derailed or delayed by objections in the planning system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Government Chief Whip Mary Butler, during a visit to Passage East in Co Waterford, said there was frustration among many people about delays in putting flood defences in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fire and flood repair specialist Kevin Kelly said the devastation caused by last week\u2019s flooding is different from what he has previously seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His team is working on about 100 homes in Aughrim, Co Wicklow, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford and Rathfarnham in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767177877588-3bab3de8-62c2-4c3b-9d11-75f906621012.jpeg\"\/>A wet week in Irish politics<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kelly, who has been in business since 2002, said: \u201cThis flood is not like any other flood before, as in the force of this flood, the way it came and how fast it came. It\u2019s a miracle &#8230; that nobody drowned in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The strength of the flood water, he said, meant it left a lot more \u201cfilth and mud and dirt\u201d than usual in people\u2019s homes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sinn F\u00e9in leader Mary Lou McDonald was critical of the Government. She said, \u201cflooding is not alone predictable, it is also preventable\u201d.
