{"id":320175,"date":"2026-02-04T17:47:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T17:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/320175\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T17:47:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T17:47:08","slug":"man-who-fraudulently-used-property-developers-bank-details-to-buy-bmw-suv-jailed-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/320175\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who fraudulently used property developer\u2019s bank details to buy BMW SUV jailed \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man who fraudulently used a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\">Limerick<\/a> property developer\u2019s bank details to purchase a BMW SUV has been jailed for 2\u00bd years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gareth Delaney (25), of Hyde Court, Golf Links Road, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roscommon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roscommon\/\">Roscommon<\/a>, pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to theft using bank account details belonging to Jerry O\u2019Sullivan, of Appletree Developments, Ballysimon, Limerick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prosecuting barrister John O\u2019Sullivan told the court O\u2019Sullivan contacted garda\u00ed after he noticed a number of \u201csuspicious\u201d withdrawals from his business bank account on dates between December 31st, 2024 and January 13th, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed examined the account and established that \u20ac30,214.29 had been fraudulently withdrawn by Delaney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The defendant was arrested after he used his own name and address to purchase items using his phone, including a BMW X5 SUV which cost \u20ac27,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delaney told garda\u00ed he discovered the bank account details on a business card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delaney, acknowledged in interviews with garda\u00ed that he had no right to withdraw funds belonging to O\u2019Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard Delaney had reimbursed all of the money taken and the SUV was returned to the dealership where it was purchased. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donal Cronin, barrister for Delaney, noted that some of the items fraudulently purchased had been delivered to Delaney\u2019s home and garda\u00ed agreed that the offending \u201clacked sophistication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cronin said Delaney had worked as an apprentice mechanic and lorry driver, and felt \u201cshame\u201d and \u201cremorse\u201d over the thefts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The accused had an undiagnosed ADHD condition at that time, was impulsive and under financial pressure, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Colin Daly said Delaney was, in his opinion, \u201can intelligent young man who clearly knew what he was doing was wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe theft of the car was for his own gratification.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge set a headline sentence of five years, which he reduced to three years.
