intelligence<\/a> (AI) tools are trained not to undress people or create nude images, its representatives are expected to tell the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\">Oireachtas<\/a> media committee on Wednesday, according to a copy of the company\u2019s opening statement seen by The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-media\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-media\/\">social-media<\/a> company, which owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/instagram\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/instagram\/\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/whatsapp\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/whatsapp\">WhatsApp<\/a>, is set to tell the committee it takes \u201can extremely strong stance against non-consensual intimate imagery, whether it\u2019s real or AI-generated\u201d with the sharing of such media treated as \u201camong our most serious policy violations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur AI tools are trained not to comply with requests to create nude images or to remove clothes from people shown in images \u2013 and we have built-in safeguards to prevent these violating images from being created,\u201d Dualta \u00d3 Broin, the director of public policy for Meta Ireland, is expected to say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is set to appear at the joint Oireachtas media committee on Wednesday, alongside Meta colleague David Miles, safety policy director for EMEA, and representatives from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tiktok\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tiktok\/\">TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sitting comes shortly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">European Commission<\/a> opened a formal investigation into social-media platform X and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/grok\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/grok\/\">Grok<\/a>\u2019s \u201cnudification\u201d feature that allowed users to digitally undress images of people, including children, without their sending a written submission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Labour TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-kelly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-kelly\/\">Alan Kelly<\/a>, chairman of the Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport committee, labelled X\u2019s refusal to appear at the that X have refused to attend especially after a request was additionally made by the Taoiseach for them to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris has said it is \u201cdisrespectful\u201d but not surprising that Elon musk\u2019s X has rejected an invitation to the Oireachtas media committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Media Patrick O\u2019Donovan will bring a memo to cabinet today outlining Ireland\u2019s plan to make online safety a centrepiece of its presidency of the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Arriving to cabinet on Wednesday morning, Harris said on Wednesday that his clear view was that the health and wellbeing of young people was being \u201cexperimented on\u201d by social media companies and that there should be a minimum age for use of the platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he was \u201cdisappointed but not surprised\u201d that X had turned down an invitation to discuss social media regulation and safety at the Oireachtas media committee today (Weds). He said the move was \u201cdisrespectful\u201d and \u201cunhelpful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s not the be all and end all,\u201d he said, adding that the company cannot ignore that the EU had opened an investigation into its Grok AI tool. Social media cannot be self regulating, he said, adding: \u201cit\u2019s no longer about asking social media companies nicely if they would like to comply with basic decency and humanity\u2026 we now have laws, Irish laws, European laws\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In relation to age verification, TikTok\u2019s head of public policy and government relations Susan Moss is expected to say that \u201cdespite best efforts, there remains no globally agreed-upon method for effectively confirming a person\u2019s age in a way that also preserves their privacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Moss is set to state that TikTok will begin to roll out \u201cenhanced technology\u201d in Europe to support its moderation teams in detecting and removing accounts of those younger than 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe remain the only big platform to transparently publish every quarter the number of suspected under-13 accounts that we remove,\u201d her opening statement reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She is set to explain that a series of technological advancements are helping the company to \u201cget violative content down faster, reducing the likelihood of our community seeing it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Automating takedowns, she is set to say, is allowing TikTok\u2019s safety teams to work on tasks that \u201cmost benefits from human expertise \u2013 like handling appeals, consulting external experts and responding to fast-moving events\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokeswoman for TikTok confirmed the veracity of the company\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The committee meeting on Wednesday, its chairman said, is due to examine how big online platforms approach regulation, online safety and the protection of minors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Issues including content moderation, technology and human oversight to address harmful and illegal content, and age-appropriate design will also be discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the committee, Google will be represented by its government affairs and public policy manager, Ryan Meade, alongside Chloe Setter, the company\u2019s child safety public policy manager.
