{"id":321421,"date":"2026-02-05T10:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/321421\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:09:11","slug":"japans-owl-spy-satellites-in-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/321421\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan\u2019s &#8216;Owl&#8217; spy satellites in orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earth observation specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Synspective<\/a> has been selected as a partner company in the Satellite Constellation Project of Japan\u2019s Ministry of Defense. A designer and operator of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, it will contribute imaging data and analytics to the project.\u00a0 Synspective also has close links with the US space and defense establishment and with NATO.<\/p>\n<p>A special-purpose company established to implement the project by Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsui &amp; Co. and <a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2025\/02\/japans-sky-perfect-to-build-defense-satellite-constellation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SKY Perfect JSAT<\/a> is expected to sign a 5-year contract with the ministry this month. Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axelspacehd.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Axelspace<\/a> and Institute for Q-shu Pioneers of Space (<a href=\"https:\/\/i-qps.net\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">QPS<\/a>) will also participate as partner companies.<\/p>\n<p>The project will employ a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to build a satellite constellation operated by private companies, aiming to provide consistent and timely satellite imaging intelligence to strengthen the defense ministry\u2019s space situational awareness, reconnaissance and stand-off defense capabilities. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyperfectjsat.space\/en\/news\/20251225\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SKY Perfect JSAT<\/a>, \u201cExisting commercial satellite imagery services may not consistently deliver images when required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SAR, as explained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/earth-observation-data-basics\/sar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>, is a type of active data collection in which an instrument sends out a pulse of energy and then records the amount of that energy reflected back after it has interacted with Earth. Unlike optical imagery, which is a passive data collection technique based on emitted energy, SAR imagery is created from the reaction of an emitted pulse of energy with physical structures and conditions \u2013 regardless of darkness, cloud cover, or state of matter (e.g. tracking oil spills).<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese government\u2019s PFI leverages private sector capital and expertise to improve the quality and lower the cost of national defense and other social infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>Synspective was founded in 2018 as an outgrowth of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jst.go.jp\/impact\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ImPACT<\/a> (Impulsing Paradigm Change through Disruptive Technologies) program, a Japanese government-led R&amp;D initiative started four years earlier to promote high-risk, high-impact scientific and technological innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Structured as a venture company, Synspective was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market in December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>ImPACT developed the core technology for Synspective\u2019s small SAR satellites. In 2020, Synspective\u2019s first SAR satellite, <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/satellite\/satellite-strix\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">StriX-a<\/a>, was put into a Sun Synchronous Orbit at an altitude of 500km by an <a href=\"https:\/\/rocketlaunch.org\/launch-providers\/rocket-lab\/electron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electron rocket<\/a> launched by Rocket Lab from its Mahia Peninsula spaceport in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>The StriX name comes from Strix Uralensis, the scientific name of the Ural owl, which is common in Japan and ranges across Russia to Scandinavia. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/satellite\/satellite-strix\/#:~:text=Inspired%20by%20the%20Owl%3A%20StriX&amp;text=Often%20revered%20as%20a%20symbol,the%20Greek%20Goddess%20of%20wisdom.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owls<\/a>,\u201d Synspective notes, \u201chave highly developed hearing and vision, allowing them to forage even in total darkness. Being able to see at night is also an important feature of SAR satellites. The satellite\u2019s extended antenna, reminiscent of bird wings, further underscores this connection to its namesake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the sixth StriX satellite was launched by Rocket Lab and a 10 Electron launch contract was signed with Rocket Lab for 2025-27. Synspective also began <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/press-release\/2024\/yamatotechnologycenter\/#:~:text=release%202024.11.08-,Synspective%20Begins%20Full%2DScale%20Operations%20at%20the%20Yamato%20Technology%20Center,database%2C%20and%20analyzing%20the%20data.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass production<\/a> of SAR satellites at its Yamato Technology Center in Kanagawa Prefecture west of Yokohama.<\/p>\n<p>Built in collaboration with Japanese manufacturers Tokyo Keiki and Seiren, the Yamato factory is designed to produce 12 satellites per year, which should enable Synspective to reach its goal of launching constellation of 30 small SAR satellites by the late 2020s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokyokeiki.jp\/e\/products\/rf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tokyo Keiki<\/a> produces microwave power amplifier modules for Synspective satellites. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seiren.com\/english\/invest\/about\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seiren<\/a> is a precision textile manufacturer that has expanded into electronics and the production of micro-satellites.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, representatives of the US military, Department of State, NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) and NASA visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/information\/2025\/us_embassy_ymt_visit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yamato Technology Center<\/a>. The most prominent of these visitors was the <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/information\/2025\/ussf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commander of the US Space Force, Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2025, Synspective established a subsidiary in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satellitetoday.com\/technology\/2025\/03\/18\/synspective-establishes-us-subsidiaries-to-expand-north-american-presence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado<\/a> (two, actually, a holding company and an operating company). In April, <a href=\"https:\/\/usgif.org\/biography\/ronda-schrenk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ronda Schrenk<\/a>, CEO of the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aocglobalservices.com\/about-us\/leadership\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Edwards<\/a>, CEO of defense contractor AOC Global Services, were appointed to Synspective USA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/press-release\/2025\/usa-board-members\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">board of directors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh StriX SAR satellite, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/press-release\/2025\/seventh_launch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owl New World<\/a>\u201d mission was launched last October and deployed in December.<\/p>\n<p>Synspective also has a subsidiary in Singapore, established in 2021, that oversees the company\u2019s activities in Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe. These include collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satim.co\/#about-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SATIM<\/a>, a Polish developer of AI-based Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) using SAR imagery. SATIM\u2019s algorithms have been <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/press-release\/2025\/odc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">integrated<\/a> into Synspective\u2019s analytical platform, improving detection and classification of target objects.<\/p>\n<p>Synspective\u2019s SAR satellite is in the 100kg class. Although its weight is about a tenth of the weight of a conventional large SAR satellite, it equals the performance of large SAR satellites, according to Synspective. Accounting for development and launch expenses, it costs about a twentieth as much.<\/p>\n<p>Synspective\u2019s SAR satellites can obtain data covering over 1,000km2 with 1m-3m resolution anywhere in the world. Synspective provides SAR data and remote monitoring services, plus cloud-based analytics, to government agencies and companies worldwide for purposes of disaster response, environmental monitoring and, of course, national security.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2024, Synspective announced that it had acquired images with a 25cm azimuth resolution, the highest resolution achieved by a Japanese company, during a test observation in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/press-release\/2024\/staringspotlight_25cm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Staring Spotlight Mode<\/a>, which continuously illuminates a specific spot on the ground surface to obtain high-resolution images.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/azimuth-resolution#:~:text=Azimuth%20resolution%20is%20defined%20as,direction%20parallel%20to%20the%20flight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Azimuth resolution<\/a>,\u201d according to ScienceDirect, \u201cis defined as the measure of the ability of a radar system to distinguish between two targets located in the direction parallel to the flight path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Synspective\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/synspective.com\/company\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mission Statement<\/a> begins hopefully, saying it intends to \u201ccreate a new infrastructure that enables the next generation to understand our Earth and achieve a resilient future\u201d \u2013 but then gets to the point:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Everyone shares the common hope for people to live peacefully and enhance their quality of life for themselves and future generations. However, disasters and conflicts now threaten this hope. The vital infrastructure we\u2019ve created has been destroyed, and countless lives have been lost. Moreover, environmental challenges and limited resources are obstructing sustainable development.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Synspective\u2019s senior executives are members of Japan\u2019s project management and space engineering elite. CEO Motoyuki Arai is a former business consultant with a PhD in Technology Management from the University of Tokyo who has experience leading energy and other infrastructure projects in Asia, the Middle East and Africa and in disaster-stricken areas in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Engineer Toshihiro Obata oversees the development, manufacturing and operation of the company\u2019s small SAR satellites. Prior to joining Synspective, he worked at Mitsubishi Electric for nearly 20 years, first leading the team working on attitude control subsystems for Earth observation satellites, then as the manager of systems engineering for Earth observation satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Revenue Officer Takayuki Odawara is a geospatial business development expert with 30 years of experience in Earth observation and remote sensing, location-based services, connected cars, and intelligent transportation systems.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Officer and General Manager Tomoyuki Imaizumi oversees ground system development and data production.
