{"id":32166,"date":"2025-08-30T04:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T04:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/32166\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T04:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T04:12:12","slug":"on-the-presidential-campaign-trail-with-gareth-sheridan-and-nick-delehanty-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/32166\/","title":{"rendered":"On the presidential campaign trail with Gareth Sheridan and Nick Delehanty \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The second thing you notice about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gareth-sheridan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gareth-sheridan\/\">Gareth Sheridan<\/a> is his youth. He was 36 last week and looks much younger, incredibly fresh-faced despite wearing a beard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If he makes it on to the ballot paper, he will be the youngest candidate to contest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/presidential-election\/\">election<\/a> since the office was established in 1937. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first thing is his height. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan stands at six foot, seven inches and will indubitably also have the distinction of being the tallest person to contest the election. (\u00c9amon de Valera was four inches shorter.) In the Br\u00fa cultural centre (a modern building) in Cashel on Wednesday, Sheridan had to stoop to come in through the door. An act of contortion would be required for him to go through some of the ancient doorways of the Rock of Cashel above us in the Co Tipperary town. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan, from Terenure in Dublin, is a cofounder (in 2012) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nutriband\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nutriband\/\">Nutribrand<\/a>, a US-based company that  has developed transdermal drug-delivery products \u2013 essentially patches that deliver drugs through the skin. Its lead product is a patch for the delivery of pain-relief opioid, fentanyl, which deters abuse of the drug. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He lived in Salt Lake City with his wife Heidi and daughter Roe until January when he returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/10\/pharma-businessman-gareth-sheridan-enters-presidential-race-as-independents-compete-for-nominations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/10\/pharma-businessman-gareth-sheridan-enters-presidential-race-as-independents-compete-for-nominations\/\">begin his presidential campaign<\/a>. He is a former Young Entrepreneur of the Year and was a finalist for the senior gong this year, before withdrawing to concentrate on the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is in the middle of his campaign to get on the ballot. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan is unlikely to receive the backing of 20 Oireachtas members so he will need to be nominated by four of the 31 councils.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Gareth Sheridan with his wife Heidi in the  Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, to announce his presidential bid. Photograph: Alan Betson <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For now, it\u2019s the modern version of the chicken dinner circuit. Sheridan has been meeting councillors one-to-one for weeks now, looking for their support. On Wednesday it was Tipperary. Later that evening he travelled to Kerry. He has been living on the road for weeks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So what is the motivation for a businessman  to divert so radically and have a tilt at the presidency? It\u2019s about representation, he says; representing Ireland internationally and at home, and representing a \u201cbig group of people who don\u2019t feel represented\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Specifically, it\u2019s the locked-out generation, younger people who can\u2019t buy a home or have had to live abroad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cArticle 45.2.1 of the Constitution says that the citizens may through their occupations find the means of a reasonable provision for their domestic needs,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/08\/12\/dont-underestimate-this-guy-who-is-gareth-sheridan-the-pharma-millionaire-running-for-president\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Don\u2019t underestimate this guy\u2019: Who is Gareth Sheridan, the pharma millionaire running for president?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd what\u2019s your number one domestic need? It\u2019s a roof over your head. This is a constitutional failure at Government level. I\u2019m not saying I will be an antagonist to the Government, but you can keep that top of the narrative and remind people we need to have a solution-oriented focus,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think now is the time for somebody to change the opportunities afforded to the younger generations, and that starts with somebody who is of that generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan says that conversations with new people he meets open with the line: \u201cAre you insane?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He knows that any possible sketchy record in his patch company will be subjected to intense scrutiny, as will his record and back story. His views on Gaza and a United Ireland would not differ from mainstream Irish opinion. He indicates he is trying to steer a middle path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t mind being scrutinised or having a forensic review of me as a person. That\u2019s part and parcel of it. We need to know who\u2019s representing us,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have such a division. You can have a different opinion of somebody without hating them. We are going down this left and right narrative now where if you don\u2019t agree with me you are not my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan is a smooth communicator and presents as somebody who is plausible in his ambition. Given the predilection of councillors to give the nod to people whom they like, Sheridan  has a biddable chance of making it into the race. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Elsewhere, ducking out of the miserably cold rain in Roscommon town on Thursday, and into John Corcoran men\u2019s wear on Church Street, Nick Delehanty announces with aplomb that he\u2019s looking for their \u201cbest presidential suit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delehanty, a 35-year-old Independent candidate and critic of immigration, ran very unsuccessfully in both the local and general elections last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But he believes he could fare better in a national campaign such as the presidency where he can capitalise on the \u201corganic\u201d online base he has built. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Presidential candidate Nick Delehanty makes the rounds in Roscommon, being interviewed by the Roscommon People. Photograph: Chris Maddaloni <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His pitch to councillors will include analytics of his social media content, particularly his engagement and metrics with those aged between 20 to 45. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe demographic of councillors is the opposite,\u201d Delehanty says. \u201cSo it\u2019s like starting again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He says his online audience is 95 per cent Irish, earning more support from men on video-sharing network TikTok, but a more even gender split on the \u201cbetter ground\u201d of image-sharing Instagram. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His most viral videos are critiques of the State\u2019s international protection system, which has made him a bit of a darling in online right-wing spaces, though he effusively resists the label, opting to call himself a \u201cradical centrist\u201d instead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/26\/if-we-get-on-the-ballot-i-wont-come-last-nick-delehanty-launches-presidential-campaign\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018If we get on the ballot, I won\u2019t come last\u2019: Nick Delehanty launches presidential campaignOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Leaning over a clothes rail and listening to Delehanty\u2019s pitch is local Fianna F\u00e1il councillor Marty McDermott, who works in the shop. (\u201cGive it a good plug, all the top brands!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe very best of luck to you now,\u201d he tells Delehanty. \u201cYou\u2019re a brave man.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delehanty was meeting local representatives in Roscommon on Thursday. He also targeted councillors in Athlone this week, a tactical decision to capitalise on Delehanty supporting protests against a proposal to accommodate international protection applicants in tented accommodation at Lissywollen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delehanty jokes that \u201cthe further you get from Dublin\u201d, the more likely Fianna F\u00e1il councillors are to hear him out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His campaign is focusing on the party of Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin, believing Fianna F\u00e1il representatives have been more receptive to him than those in Fine Gael. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Councillors who have grappled or even sympathised with local protests against international protection accommodation service (IPAS) centres may be amenable to Delehanty, who is earnest, articulate and well-prepared in his pitches. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But he is not an uncontroversial figure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For example, he says he is open to Ireland adopting a measure that would see high-value items beyond a certain threshold, such as smartphones or cash, being taken from people who come here seeking international protection. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In other European countries, the laws are ostensibly about seizing assets that can help fund the cost of accommodating people seeking asylum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Delehanty says that under such a law, the likelihood would be that \u201cyou actually end up taking nothing from anybody\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Independent presidential candidate Nick speaks with Fianna F&#xE1;il Councillor Marty McDermott at John Corcoran&#x2019;s Menswear shop, in Roscommon. Because if somebody is coming in and they have an iPhone, and they\u2019re just coming in for purely economic reasons, they don\u2019t apply [for international protection]. It just raises the bar. The goal of an asylum system should be to help the most neediest people in the world,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But surely people with acute need, such as those in Gaza for example, would also have high-value items such as smartphones? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYep, that\u2019s a good point &#8230; ,\u201d he concedes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But instead of resiling from the position completely, he says \u201clet\u2019s have the debate\u201d and \u201csocialise\u201d these ideas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A self-professed \u201cfree speech maximalist\u201d, Delehanty is sometimes a proponent of ideas he doesn\u2019t even seem to fully agree with himself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For example, he\u2019s open to a law that would ban facial coverings for Muslim women working in the Civil Service, even while admitting: \u201cIf someone wants to wear a headscarf, they should be allowed to wear a headscarf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo that\u2019s right up to the line &#8230; but let\u2019s have the debate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also thinks Muslim women in Ireland should also be obliged to shake hands with men, despite the fact it is considered haram, as part of his critique of \u201cmulticulturalism\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These views may be of note to councillors, who will recall colleagues who were criticised for airing the views of the likes of conspiracy theorist Gemma O\u2019Doherty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sheridan and Delehanty seem to be the only prospective candidates at present who are seriously canvassing for the support of councils. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Correspondence received by a number of councils from presidential hopefuls so far includes Sheridan and Delehanty, a couple of complete unknowns and a novelty candidate, which is actually a wheelbarrow called Barry Wheely-Row. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Michael+Flatley+irish+times&amp;rlz=1C1GCEU_enIE1001IE1001&amp;oq=Michael+Flatley+irish+times&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDggAEEUYJxg7GIAEGIoFMg4IABBFGCcYOxiABBiKBTIGCAEQRRhAMgcIAhAAGIAEMgcIAxAAGIAEMgcIBBAAGIAEMgcIBRAAGIAEMgcIBhAAGIAEMgYIBxBFGDzSAQgxMjU2ajBqN6gCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Michael+Flatley+irish+times&amp;rlz=1C1GCEU_enIE1001IE1001&amp;oq=Michael+Flatley+irish+times&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDggAEEUYJxg7GIAEGIoFMg4IABBFGCcYOxiABBiKBTIGCAEQRRhAMgcIAhAAGIAEMgcIAxAAGIAEMgcIBBAAGIAEMgcIBRAAGIAEMgcIBhAAGIAEMgYIBxBFGDzSAQgxMjU2ajBqN6gCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Michael Flatley<\/a> is currently on holiday and there is no record yet of him having contacted a council. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conor-mcgregor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conor-mcgregor\/\">Conor McGregor<\/a> is cosplaying as a nominated candidate online, having made no effort at all to seek a nomination in real life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite the genuine efforts of Delehanty and Sheridan, Dr Eoin O\u2019Malley of Dublin City University\u2019s School of Law and Government remains pessimistic about the Young Turks\u2019 path to the ballot paper. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Malley says that if Fine Gael and Fianna F\u00e1il councillors follow the directions of their party headquarters, it could be \u201calmost impossible\u201d for Independents to get on the ticket. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSome councillors probably are a little disaffected with the leadership and may feel that there\u2019s nothing to lose [by facilitating an Independent],\u201d says  O\u2019Malley. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou might get a few councillors who say: \u2018Let\u2019s give them a chance,\u2019 but to get enough across four councils seems like a step too far.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The second thing you notice about Gareth Sheridan is his youth.
