{"id":321876,"date":"2026-02-05T16:00:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/321876\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T16:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:00:07","slug":"deportations-of-irish-citizens-from-us-rose-330-dail-hears-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/321876\/","title":{"rendered":"Deportations of Irish citizens from US rose 330%, D\u00e1il hears \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of Irish citizens seeking consular assistance about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emigration\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emigration\/\">deportation<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> increased from 15 in 2024 to 65 last year, the D\u00e1il has heard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State for Foreign Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/neale-richmond\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/neale-richmond\/\">Neale Richmond<\/a> said the overall number may seem small but \u201cit is a 330 per cent increase\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added that one person has sought assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2026 so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those seeking assistance include both people who have been deported and those who are still going through the deportation process, \u201cwhich may include being held in detention by US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ice-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ice-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement\/\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> (Ice)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deportation figures hovered between five and 18 over the five years immediately before 2025. There were 18 deportation cases in 2023 and 11 in 2022. The lowest number over the last seven years was in 2021, when there were five cases. There were 13 in 2020 and 16 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Richmond said the department did not comment on individual cases, to protect identities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also declined to provide details on locations \u201cin case doing so could compromise the citizen\u2019s right to privacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister told Labour foreign affairs spokesman Duncan Smith the figure only included cases where a citizen or their family had sought help. It \u201cdoes not necessarily reflect all deportations to Ireland or where a citizen is currently being detained by Ice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Smith said Ireland\u2019s figure for the number of cases is 66, including the one case for 2026. He said \u201cIce\u2019s figure for January to September last year was 99\u2033, which suggested dozens of Irish people have been held and not sought consular assistance.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe should be doing more to seek out where those Irish citizens are, where they\u2019re being held,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Dublin Fingal East TD added \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s good enough in this circumstance for us to sit back and wait\u201d for people to seek consular assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said Minister for Foreign Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/helen-mcentee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/helen-mcentee\/\">Helen McEntee<\/a>, who is currently in the US, should \u201cat the very least\u201d request from the secretary for homeland security \u201cdetails of all Irish citizens, both documented and undocumented, in terms of their detention and where they\u2019re being held\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland should request that \u201con the grounds that we have very real humanitarian concerns in relation to how our citizens are being held along with other immigrant groups from around the world\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a manifestation of the creeping fascism with the United States. We need to hold the United States to account on this,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He cited the case of Irish citizen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/12\/22\/irish-grandmother-speaks-on-release-from-us-immigration-detention-its-fabulous\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/12\/22\/irish-grandmother-speaks-on-release-from-us-immigration-detention-its-fabulous\/\">Donna Hughes-Brown<\/a> (59), who had been living legally in the US since the age of 11. She was detained over two cheques that bounced years ago and which she subsequently cleared. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/11\/20\/jim-browns-battle-in-washington-to-free-his-irish-wife-from-ice-detention\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018She\u2019s been degraded\u2019: A man\u2019s battle in Washington to free his Irish wife from Ice detentionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When she returned from a break in Ireland \u201cshe was detained, taken out of state from Chicago to Kentucky, and held in conditions that are absolutely deplorable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister told him \u201cI don\u2019t necessarily disagree with you on that point but there are very real challenges\u201d.
