{"id":322248,"date":"2026-02-05T20:42:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T20:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/322248\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T20:42:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T20:42:10","slug":"how-covid-shutdowns-led-to-a-methane-surge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/322248\/","title":{"rendered":"How COVID shutdowns led to a methane surge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-content\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">In the early 2020s, as societies around the world shut down to protect their people from the COVID-19 pandemic, the atmosphere experienced an <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/environment\/greenhouse-gases\/Atmospheric-levels-methane-post-record\/100\/i13\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unusually large methane surge<\/a>. Atmospheric scientists took notice. With everyone stuck at home avoiding travel, \u201cwe expected that the anthropogenic methane emissions could decrease a little bit,\u201d Peking University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=DbOB0D4AAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shushi Peng<\/a> says. So what caused the potent greenhouse gas to spike instead of fall?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">To find an answer, Peng and a team of 41 scientists came together to determine the <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/environment\/climate-change\/Methane-emissions-reach-record-levels\/98\/i28\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global methane budget<\/a>\u2014a measure of the methane emitted and removed from the atmosphere\u2014from 2019 to 2023. With their diversity of expertise, the group was able to propose a primary culprit behind the 2020\u201321 methane surge: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.adx8262\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The atmosphere\u2019s self-cleaning chemistry was momentarily hampered<\/a> (Science 2026, DOI: 10.1126\/science.adx8262).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">\u201cThey threw the kitchen sink at the problem,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucr.edu\/app\/home\/profile\/fhopkins\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francesca Hopkins<\/a>, a climate change scientist at University of California, Riverside, who was not involved in the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">The team primed three independent computational models with a wealth of surface measurements from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stations across the US and space-based observations from the GOSAT satellite. The models reveal that when fewer people operated combustion engines because of COVID, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) dropped. That reduction inadvertently caused less methane to be scrubbed from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">NOx reacts with air to form hydroxyl radicals. These go on to destroy methane, turning it into carbon dioxide, a less potent greenhouse gas. So, less NOx inadvertently led to more methane persisting in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">At the same time, the models show that wetlands in tropical Africa and Southeastern Asia were emitting more methane due to three continuous La Ni\u00f1a years, Peng says. It was a perfect formula for an atmospheric methane spike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">\u201cI appreciate that they are considering chemistry and chemistry models\u201d of the atmosphere, says <a href=\"https:\/\/cpaess.ucar.edu\/cgc-host\/benjamin-gaubert\" shape=\"rect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Gaubert<\/a>, an atmospheric chemist at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research who was not involved in the work. It will be useful for future studies to use more complex atmospheric chemistry models to tease apart what\u2019s going on in the methane budget, Gaubert says. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting, and I think it\u2019s going to spark discussion,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-content\">\u201cThis paper really highlights the success of all these multitiered methods that we\u2019ve developed as a community,\u201d Hopkins says. And it demonstrates how tricky it will be to fight climate change.
