{"id":322828,"date":"2026-02-06T04:30:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T04:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/322828\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T04:30:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T04:30:18","slug":"restaurant-prices-rise-0-6-0-8-in-the-latest-cpi-inflation-report-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/322828\/","title":{"rendered":"Restaurant prices rise 0.6-0.8% in the latest CPI inflation report data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Food prices are going up nationwide \u2014 and not just in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">grocery stores.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report in January, a monthly snapshot tracking inflation in America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Restaurant prices<\/a> increased between 0.6% and 0.8% in December, compared with November, the CPI found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/happy-hour-habits-shift-bar-culture-america-whos-drinking-when\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>HAPPY HOUR HABITS SHIFT BAR CULTURE IN AMERICA: WHO&#8217;S DRINKING WHEN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The food away from home index also rose 0.7% in December,&#8221; the report states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The index for full-service meals rose 0.8% over the month and the index for limited-service meals increased 0.6%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rising-cost-of-eating-out-prices-going-up-food-drink-3.jpg\" alt=\"Diner handing check to waiter\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Restaurant prices increased again in December, according to new Consumer Price Index data released by federal officials. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>As the latest research leaves families wondering how much they should budget for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/meals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">restaurant meals,<\/a> Fox News Digital spoke with two experts to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Hoobler, a managing partner at Steep Ravine Brewing Company in Highland Park, Illinois, said his restaurant is one of the most affordable options in the area \u2014 and prices have still gone up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Prior to COVID<\/a>, a family of four could dine with us for approximately $48 plus drinks, taxes and tip,&#8221; Hoobler said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/popular-sandwich-chain-closes-last-location-minnesota-offering-fans-one-final-bite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>POPULAR SANDWICH CHAIN CLOSES LAST LOCATION IN MINNESOTA, OFFERING FANS ONE FINAL BITE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That same meal today typically costs about $62 plus drinks, taxes and tips.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He credited this to the lingering effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/economy\/inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">COVID-linked inflation<\/a>, as well as sharp wage increases.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote\">\n<p class=\"quote-text\">Consumers &#8220;are spending less than they did a year ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The restaurant industry has always operated on thin margins, and like many others, we were cautious about passing along higher costs,&#8221; Hoobler said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the past four years, we have absorbed a significant portion of these cost increases ourselves. We have also experienced substantial increases on the labor side, as staffing became more challenging and wages increased by as much as 50% for certain positions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rising-cost-of-eating-out-prices-going-up-food-drink-4.jpg\" alt=\"Family eating at Mexican restaurant\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Diners are often skipping appetizers, drinks and premium menu items to manage higher restaurant bills. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Many restaurant operators are trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/affordable-menus-smaller-portions-need-offered-restaurants-celebrity-chef-insists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">do more with less<\/a> amid inflation, said Bo Bryant, a restaurateur who goes by &#8220;The Restaurant Giant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Operators are very aware that consumers are suffering from menu price fatigue and the overall value proposition restaurants are offering,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, many operators are faced with a dilemma: Since they can&#8217;t take the necessary price increases they need to maintain their profitability, they will be forced to [reduce] quality in one capacity or another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rising-cost-of-eating-out-prices-going-up-food-drink-1.jpg\" alt=\"Man looking at receipt\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Consumers are increasingly aware of menu price increases, contributing to what experts call menu price fatigue. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Despite the increase in prices, the Arizona-based expert said restaurant traffic is still steady \u2014 but consumers &#8220;are spending less than they did a year ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that diners are still opting to eat in restaurants rather than order takeout, but are typically foregoing appetizers, drinks and higher-priced items <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/steak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">like steaks.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bryant said it&#8217;s hard to say what an average meal costs for a family, as it relies on factors that vary widely from state to state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All things considered, Bryant said, the &#8220;overall outlook is not so bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rising-cost-of-eating-out-prices-going-up-food-drink-2.jpg\" alt=\"Family eating in restaurant\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Consumers &#8220;are spending less than they did a year ago&#8221; and skipping appetizers and drinks, said one restaurateur.
