Microsoft\u2019s mandatory security update this month has been fraught<\/a> with several issues<\/a>. But one of those stands out from the rest. The mystery of failing SSD drives and corrupted data when saving large files \u2014 especially, some claimed, games.<\/p>\n

The first report was posted by @Necoru_cat on X<\/a>, and warned that \u201cdrives disappear from the OS (SMART data also becomes unreadable); in some cases, access to the buffered tree is possible, but files cannot be read.\u201d This seems to be a \u201csuspected issue with the operation of the drive cache\u201d with a \u201chigh likelihood of file corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Microsoft has finally concluded its \u201cinvestigation<\/a>\u201d and told Windows users that \u201cafter a thorough investigation,\u201d it has \u201cfound no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media.”<\/p>\n

Or as Bleeping Computer<\/a> put it, August\u2019s Windows update \u201cdidn\u2019t kill your SSD.\u201d<\/p>\n

The original warning<\/a> suggested \u201cSSDs with over 60% usage after approximately 50GB of continuous writing\u201d are affected, with \u201csimilar symptoms on HDDs as well. Our tests suggest that Phison NAND controllers are relatively prone to issues, with DRAM-less models from the same company tending to exhibit issues at lower write volumes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to this, Phison told me it was aware of the reported issues \u201cthat potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. We understand the disruption this may have caused and promptly engaged industry stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company said it was \u201csteadfast in our commitment to product integrity and the success of our partners and end users,\u201d and that \u201cthe controllers that may have been affected are under review and we are working with partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

The advice to users was not to save large files to SSDs until the issue was resolved. Now you have the green light to save those files again, after Microsoft\u2019s update.<\/p>\n
