The work of four Irish Times photographers was highly commended at the AIB<\/a> Press Photographer of the Year awards on Friday evening.<\/p>\n

The annual awards, now in their 48th year, were hosted by broadcaster Miriam O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> at O\u2019Reilly Hall, University College Dublin.<\/p>\n

Mark Condren of Mediahuis<\/a> Ireland won the overall prize for a record seventh time, with judges praising his \u201csuperb skill\u201d and \u201cexceptional range of subject matter across multiple categories\u201d.<\/p>\n

Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers<\/a> presented Condren with the award.<\/p>\n

A native of Castletownroche, Co Cork, Condren began his career with local newspaper The Avondhu before later working with The Corkman and The Sunday Tribune. He now works for the Irish Independent.<\/p>\n

Images taken by four photographers from The Irish Times \u2013 Tom Honan<\/a>, Bryan O\u2019Brien, Dara Mac D\u00f3naill and Alan Betson \u2013 were among those shortlisted at the event.<\/p>\n

Awards were presented across several categories including news; daily life and people; sports action; sports feature; portrait; nature and the environment; politics; and arts and entertainment.<\/p>\n

Four of Honan\u2019s photographs were shortlisted across different categories including a striking image of Br Kevin Crowley of the Capuchin Day Centre<\/a> in Dublin lying in repose last July.<\/p>\n

Two images by Mac D\u00f3naill were also highly commended including a photo of Aisling Rogerson scattering the ashes of her late husband Manch\u00e1n Magan<\/a> at his month\u2019s mind ceremony at the Hill of Uisneach, Westmeath, last November.<\/p>\n

Two of Betson\u2019s photographs were also showcased including a shot of crows helping themselves to the moulting fur of a young fallow deer in Dublin\u2019s Phoenix Park<\/a> as it shed its winter coat.<\/p>\n

A photograph by O\u2019Brien of a repurposed presidential election campaign poster for Fianna F\u00e1il candidate Jim Gavin<\/a>, which was found in a hedge near Rathcoole, Co Dublin, also featured.<\/p>\n

Former Irish Times photographer and picture editor Frank Miller was recognised with an honorary membership of Press Photographers Ireland.<\/p>\n

The AIB Sustainability Award was presented to Kerry freelance photographer Valerie O\u2019Sullivan for her reportage work entitled Reviving, Restoring, Re-Thatching, which visually documented the re-thatching of an old family dwelling using the ancient craft of thatching. <\/p>\n

The judges said O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s collection of images showcased \u201ca delightful use of colour and composition\u201d. <\/p>\n

The judging panel was chaired by former EU ombudsman Emily O\u2019Reilly, curator and archivist Kate Horgan and UK-based photographer Kieran Doherty. RT\u00c9\u2019s Philip Bromwell helped judge the multimedia category.<\/p>\n

All the winning and shortlisted images from the awards can be viewed in a touring exhibition, which will visit venues across the country over the coming year. The exhibition is to begin its tour in DLR Lexicon in D\u00fan Laoghaire, Co Dublin, on February 24th.<\/p>\n
