But it\u2019s yet to run into a tornado or an elephant, and odds are that it\u2019d respond poorly if it did. To try to help with those once-in-a-billion-miles scenarios, Waymo announced Friday that it is introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2026\/02\/the-waymo-world-model-a-new-frontier-for-autonomous-driving-simulation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Waymo World Model<\/a>, a generative AI model that it will use to run near-endless situations to try to make sure its cars are prepared for the unpredictable, which also just happens to fit into the latest trend in the AI space.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, Waymo\u2019s world model makes about as much sense as any use case for the technology. The company has a ton of high-definition data that it has collected from its time on the road that it can use to generate realistic re-creations of roads. But, the company said, instead of building a model based only on that information, it\u2019s going to use Google\u2019s Genie 3 model to put its cars in simulated situations that extend beyond what is already in its data set collected from cameras and lidar sensors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re excited to introduce the Waymo World Model\u2014a frontier generative mode for large-scale, hyper-realistic autonomous driving simulation built on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoogleDeepMind?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@GoogleDeepMind<\/a>\u2019s Genie 3.<\/p>\n<p>By simulating the \u201cimpossible\u201d, we proactively prepare the Waymo Driver for some of the most rare and\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pl80OMDqLC\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Pl80OMDqLC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Waymo (@Waymo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Waymo\/status\/2019804616746029508?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 6, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Google made a splash last month when it <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/googles-project-genie-is-not-for-you-2000716070\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released a beta version of Genie 3 to the public<\/a>, allowing a subset of paid subscribers to generate 3D worlds with realistic physics. That includes extreme weather conditions and natural disasters, so the cars can figure out how to navigate a tornado or flood waters; sudden safety emergencies like falling tree branches or an accident with lots of debris; and run-ins with the unexpected, like an elephant on the road. \u201cBy simulating the \u2018impossible,\u2019 we proactively prepare the Waymo Driver for some of the most rare and complex scenarios,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The theory is certainly sound, though world models aren\u2019t without their drawbacks. The early feedback on the consumer version of Genie 3 was a bit spotty, and world models are still susceptible to hallucinations. We\u2019re still in the earliest stages of seeing these models deployed, and they have lots of room to iterate.<\/p>\n<p>And Waymos have definitely had their issues in edge-case scenarios in the real world. Late last year, a Waymo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/05\/us\/waymo-kit-kat-san-francisco.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ran over a beloved bogeda cat named Kit Kat<\/a>, and last month, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/1\/29\/us-opens-probe-after-a-waymo-self-driving-car-hit-a-child-near-a-school\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ran into a kid in a school zone<\/a>.
