{"id":3253,"date":"2025-08-16T20:12:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T20:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/3253\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T20:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T20:12:08","slug":"family-of-sophie-toscan-du-plantier-supportive-of-fresh-dna-tests-in-murder-inquiry-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/3253\/","title":{"rendered":"Family of Sophie Toscan du Plantier supportive of fresh DNA tests in murder inquiry \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family of murdered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sophie-toscan-du-plantier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sophie-toscan-du-plantier\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sophie Toscan du Plantier<\/a> say they will accept whatever findings Irish forensic scientists make on foot of a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/08\/15\/sophie-toscan-du-plantier-gardai-awaiting-results-of-tests-using-advanced-dna-collection-method\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/08\/15\/sophie-toscan-du-plantier-gardai-awaiting-results-of-tests-using-advanced-dna-collection-method\/\">new DNA tests on exhibits from the near 30-year-old investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Toscan du Plantier\u2019s uncle, Jean Pierre Gazeau, said the family fully supports the decision by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garda<\/a> Serious Crime Review Team and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/forensic-science-ireland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/forensic-science-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forensic Science Ireland<\/a> (FSI) to engage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/US\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/US\/\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a> DNA collection experts irrespective of what the move yields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Gazeau said he was interested to see that the Garda and FSI had decided to avail of technology provided by M-Vac Systems to examine exhibits including the stone and concrete block used to murder his niece in west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> in 1996. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think it is the last chance for the Garda \u2013 unless, of course, some witness comes forward with new evidence. But even then, they may retract their story, which has happened before, but DNA evidence is objective and scientific and definitive, so it is a welcome development,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Gazeau, president of the Association for the Truth about the Murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, said he did not want to speculate, but that the latest approach could produce a number of different scenarios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey may find nothing but obviously if they find DNA and it does not match that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ian-bailey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ian-bailey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ian Bailey<\/a>, then it has the ability to clear Bailey of any culpability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut even if it means the outcome is not what we expect &#8230; it is a scientific outcome, and we must respect that finding and accept it because DNA testing is very definitive. Photograph: Courts Collins <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Bailey, an English journalist, was twice arrested in connection with the French film producer\u2019s murder, but was never charged, and repeatedly protested his innocence before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/01\/21\/ian-bailey-prime-suspect-for-sophie-toscan-du-plantiers-murder-dies-in-cork\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/01\/21\/ian-bailey-prime-suspect-for-sophie-toscan-du-plantiers-murder-dies-in-cork\/\" target=\"_blank\">his death last year at the age of 66<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/evidence-against-bailey-overwhelming-paris-court-hears-1.3911144\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/evidence-against-bailey-overwhelming-paris-court-hears-1.3911144\">convicted in his absence at a trial in Paris<\/a> in 2019 of the voluntary homicide of Ms Toscan du Plantier and sentenced to 25 years in jail.
