Surely you would rather have a tidy $3 million portfolio vs. a $3M dollar home?<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other reading material this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found this article interesting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningstar.com\/stocks\/3-warren-buffett-stocks-berkshire-hathaway-might-sell-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">what Berkshire might sell next now that Buffett is no longer in charge.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-selling-my-u-s-stocks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sold out of all my U.S. stocks<\/a> including Berkshire over the past few years. All ETFs now for my ex-Canada investing so I continue to own Berkshire albeit indirectly via indexing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"r5Q1lLrkpl\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-selling-my-u-s-stocks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weekend Reading \u2013 Selling my U.S. stocks<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are some<a href=\"https:\/\/awealthofcommonsense.com\/2026\/02\/some-things-ive-been-wrong-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> things that Ben Carlson has been wrong about including:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cI thought the meme stock crash of 2021 would slow the speculation. <\/strong>At the time it felt like\u00a0GameStop, AMC and the other meme stocks were a flash in the pan thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Nope\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Always interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/accidentalfire.com\/2026\/02\/06\/how-much-did-i-spend-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to read how much other retirees spend<\/a>. U.S. blogger Accidential FIRE spent \u201c\u2026<strong>$43,051\u2026<\/strong>only\u00a0$403 higher\u00a0than my total for 2024 for an\u00a0increase of 0.9%.\u00a0 So why the hell aren\u2019t I spending more!?!?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Very simple but good advice in The Globe and Mail\u00a0(subscription) about this financial case study \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/financial-facelift\/article-retirement-advice-facelift-cyril-dina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the need to downsize to free up home equity for retirement \u2013 since this couple has <\/a>\u201c\u2026<strong>a house worth $1.5-million, with a mortgage of about $400,000\u2033<\/strong> at age 59 and 65 respectively today. They will be forced to work into their early 70s if they don\u2019t make any changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They want to spend $80,000 per year in retirement.<\/p>\n<p>They won\u2019t be able to make this spending plan happen unless they downsize and clear the debt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Assets:\u00a0<\/b>Cash $7,000; her TFSA $139,530; his RRSP $138,755; residence $1,500,000. Total: $1,785,285.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Estimated commuted value of Cyril\u2019s pension plan (provided by applicant):\u00a0<\/b>$675,000. That\u2019s what someone with no pension would have to save to generate the same income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Liabilities:<\/b>\u00a0Mortgage $394,780 at 4.9 per cent; CGHL $25,915 at zero interest; car loan $5,690 at zero interest.
