{"id":327273,"date":"2026-02-08T20:50:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T20:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/327273\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T20:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T20:50:13","slug":"chinas-future-growth-rate-could-drop-to-2-5-without-market-reforms-economist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/327273\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s future growth rate could drop to 2.5% without market reforms: economist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China\u2019s long-term growth trajectory will depend on the introduction of market reforms, and the country\u2019s potential growth rate could fall to about 2.5 per cent in the coming years unless action is taken, a prominent Chinese economist has warned.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWithout a strong turnaround in total factor productivity and a meaningful expansion in household consumption, it will be difficult for China\u2019s economic growth to reach 4 per cent or higher,\u201d said Zhou Tianyong, former deputy head of the Central Party School\u2019s Institute of International Strategic Studies in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>The warning came as Beijing prepares to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3326329\/what-chinas-five-year-plan-and-why-it-so-important?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unveil its next five-year plan<\/a> and economic policy priorities for 2026, with policymakers striving to address a series of challenges at home and abroad and boost China\u2019s long-term development by accelerating innovation and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3341435\/chinas-consumer-spending-push-faces-major-challenge-debt-averse-households?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raising domestic consumption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cOur estimates for the 15th five-year plan period [from 2026 to 2030] and the decade beyond put potential growth at around 2.5 per cent,\u201d said Zhou, who is now head of the National Economic Engineering Laboratory at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, in an article posted on February 1 on the social media platform WeChat.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cPotential growth\u201d is an academic term that measures a country\u2019s long-term and sustainable productivity by calculating the inputs of labour, capital, innovation, entrepreneurs and other production factors.<\/p>\n<p>Zhou pointed to mounting supply-side pressures, as well as significant uncertainty on the demand side, including over fixed-asset investment, household spending and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3339811\/china-records-us119-trillion-trade-surplus-2025-exports-jump-55?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">goods exports<\/a>.The estimate is far lower than the 5 per cent growth in gross domestic product that China reported last year.
