With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to \u201cAwesome Artist We\u2019ve Found Around The Net.\u201d In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. Leah Kellaway<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leah Kellaway (image courtesy of \u00a9 Elle Wood Photography LLC) is a versatile mixed media illustrator who blends illustration, fine art, and design to solve creative problems for a wide variety of creative clientele in the entertainment, publishing, and pop culture industries. After a decade of working as a graphic designer, she founded Kellaway Creative in 2023 to provide visual storytelling, where she seeks to engage audiences through her use of texture, vibrant color, and bold shape language to communicate messages that empower and inspire, whether through an illustrated cover, movie poster, or a variety of other formats. Most recently, Kellaway has worked with clients including Sojourners Magazine, Drop Magazine, Paragon Books, ABV Agency, and numerous independent clients as well as shown her pop culture work with galleries including Hero Complex Gallery, Gallery 1988, ABV Gallery, and Spoke Art Gallery. When she is not working with clients or on personal illustrations, she educates young people and facilitates community mural projects. Kellaway holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Georgia (\u201816) and an MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford (\u201823).<\/p>\n

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
LEAH:<\/strong> I have the amazing privilege of being from an artistic family. My mother\u2019s side of the family is filled with fine artists, from watercolorists, to abstract painters, to photographers, while my father\u2019s side of the family is full of writers and musicians, and my god mother was an avid art advocate. Being surrounded by artists and art appreciators opened my eyes to the art world from a young age. However, I wasn\u2019t aware of the commercial art world until my undergraduate career. Through my graphic design degree at the University of Georgia, I was able to take a small handful of illustration courses. Additionally, this program also gave an annual Jack Davis Illustrator of the Year Award to distinguished illustrators, since Jack Davis was a graduate of UGA. Because of this, I was able to meet illustrators Yuko Shimizu, John Hendrix, and Steve Brodner, all of whom opened my eyes to the world of illustration. Meeting these illustrators allowed me to enter the world of illustration. For me, the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?<\/strong>
This could be an absolutely exhausting list of individuals, so I\u2019ll try to keep it short and sweet. Since I didn\u2019t know much about commercial illustration until later in life, I never truly realized my illustration inspirations until I learned more about the history of illustration. That being said, I started off my love of art with Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Frida Kahlo, Kathe Kollwitz, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimt. But even if I didn\u2019t realize the artistry in it at the time, commercial art still weaved a place in my heart as I was growing up. Individuals whose work I vividly remember as a child include the poster work of Drew Struzan, the publishing work of Mary GrandPre, Chris Sheban, Mark Braught, Brian Floca, and Brett Helquist, and the album artwork of James Jean, Dan Mumford, and Gerard Way (yes, the singer!). I also had a special place in my heart for the animated version of \u2018The Hobbit\u2019 from 1977, which I had an illustrated book of that included all of the animation\u2019s character designs. Needless to say, my mother, Barbara Tilley, who never had her work published in today\u2019s terms, but showed her work in numerous museums through the 70s and 80s, is the reason I do what I do today.<\/p>\n

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?<\/strong>
There are so many amazing working illustrators and artists out there right now, and my understanding of the illustration industry and its history has really widened my scope of knowledge. You may not find them on Instagram, but Joseph Leyendecker, Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, and Alphonse Mucha all hold very inspiring places in my soul. As for living illustrators, I\u2019ll name some of my favorites although, if you let me, this list would be exhausting: Scott M Fischer<\/a>, Greg Manchess<\/a>, John Hendrix<\/a>, Yuko Shimizu<\/a>, Kehinde Wiley<\/a>, Chuck Lukacs<\/a>, Dan Dos Santos<\/a>, Serena Malyon<\/a>, Victo Ngai<\/a>, Rovina Cai<\/a>, Tim O\u2019Brien<\/a>, Thomas Blackshear<\/a>, Kadir Nelson<\/a>, Justin Gerard<\/a>, Annie Stegg Gerard<\/a>, and Jeremy Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What advice would you have for budding artists today?<\/strong>
Make what you love. There\u2019s a lot to look at nowadays, and it can be so easy to compare yourself to others, but only you can visually communicate what is internally and intrinsically yours. No one can live your journey but you, and that journey will be a marathon, not a sprint. Be ready for the long haul. If that means you need a day job to pay your bills, know there is no shame in that. No matter what, always keep making what you love.<\/p>\n

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?<\/strong>
More movie posters and pop culture work! I have several collaborations with Hero Complex Gallery coming up and other gallery showings with ABV Gallery and Gallery 1988 throughout the year. I\u2019m hoping to expand my work into the book publishing and editorial spheres this year as well, so stay tuned!<\/p>\n

Being a fansite, we have to ask you\u2026 What are some of your favorite movies\/TV shows of all time?<\/strong>
My tippity top is the \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 series.
