{"id":32915,"date":"2025-08-30T12:51:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T12:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/32915\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T12:51:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T12:51:33","slug":"some-primary-schools-lose-hot-meals-amid-issues-of-procurement-and-food-safety-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/32915\/","title":{"rendered":"Some primary schools lose hot meals amid issues of procurement and food safety \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primary-level\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primary-level\/\">primary schools<\/a> with a small number of pupils won\u2019t receive hot school meals as planned next week due to issues related to food safety and viability concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ie\/en\/service\/29a3ff-school-meals-scheme\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ie\/en\/service\/29a3ff-school-meals-scheme\/\">School Meals Scheme<\/a>, which is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\/\">Department of Social Protection<\/a>, all primary schools are eligible for hot meals. However, some schools cannot avail of the meals due to procurement issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Separately, a number of small schools were this week informed by a service provider that they would not receive their meals due to a disagreement over food safety compliance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Social protection confirmed that a provider notified it on Wednesday evening \u201cof its intention to withdraw from providing Hot School Meals to a number of small schools, citing inability to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland\/\">Food Safety Authority of Ireland<\/a> rules and viability concerns regarding the rate of payment for the meals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Church Street National School in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, is among those affected. Principal Niall West said the school and parents have been \u201cleft in limbo\u201d by the development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe timing of it is very difficult, you know, right at the start of the school year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr West said their meal supplier told him on Thursday they would not be providing the service as planned because one of their employees would have to heat up the meals on the school premises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the past a member of [school] staff had been putting them in the oven, but that\u2019s not allowed any more,\u201d Mr West said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Church Street NS is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/deis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/deis\/\">Deis<\/a> school with only 15 pupils.
