{"id":330372,"date":"2026-02-10T19:12:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T19:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/330372\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T19:12:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T19:12:12","slug":"translink-defends-absence-of-newspapers-for-sale-in-new-340m-grand-central-station-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/330372\/","title":{"rendered":"Translink defends absence of newspapers for sale in new \u00a3340m Grand Central Station \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/translink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/translink\/\">Translink<\/a> has defended the absence of newspapers and magazines for sale in the \u00a3340 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/belfast-grand-central-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/belfast-grand-central-station\/\">Grand Central Station in Belfast<\/a>, stating its retail offering was the subject of a comprehensive marketing and tender process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Launched in September 2024 as the largest transport hub on the island of Ireland, the massive publicly-funded integrated rail and bus station is also thought to be one of the few major transport hubs in Europe where patrons cannot purchase print publications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The \u00a3340m hub replaced the much smaller Europa Bus Station, which featured two newsagents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As it stands, the only retail offering inside the new Grand Central Station is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/marks-and-spencer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/marks-and-spencer\/\">Marks &amp; Spencer<\/a> supermarket operated on a franchise basis by the SSP Group, which also operates the BrewDog pub and two Starbucks outlets within the station.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/dozens-of-jobs-set-to-go-in-us-law-firms-belfast-office-364AGIWVJZG3XML45DJEQ7RA7U\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Dozens of jobs set to go in US law firm&#x2019;s Belfast office\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/7DO4LZ7A5VMRXJG5OQLYLHDCIM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/translink-defend-absence-of-newspapers-for-sale-in-new-340m-grand-central-station-OKMUNQLA35EZ3MLQPVGZYT5I7Y\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Translink defends absence of newspapers for sale in new &#xA3;340m Grand Central Station\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/YYEEG7BW2NDUXH3LZS3F4DFUTE.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a departure from the 22 supermarkets M&amp;S owns in Northern Ireland, the shop in Grand Central does not sell any newspapers or magazines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The final was held at Grand Central Station, Belfast\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Y64DJIRUS5PUHDIX2AR4N7ODWQ.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Belfast&#8217;s Grand Central Station opened in September 2024 at a cost of around \u00a3340 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The nearest retailers selling publications are located around 300 metres away on Great Victoria Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Both SSP and M&amp;S declined to comment when contacted by The Irish News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">SSP, which specialise in travel retail in airports and other major transport locations, operate around 50 M&amp;S stores in Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Grand Central Station store is its only M&amp;S in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s understood the travel retailer does not stock newspapers or magazines in any of its franchised M&amp;S stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked about the planning around the retail provision in the transport hub, a spokesperson for Translink said: \u201cOpportunities for retail outlets in Belfast Grand Central Station were widely advertised through a local letting agent;
