The much-anticipated festival takes place over nine days, with trad music sessions, table quizzes and guided tours taking place throughout the celebration.<\/p>\n
Turbett\u2019s Funfair will also operate nightly in the village from 7pm, and 2pm on Sundays.<\/p>\n
Meelin native and current Cork Rose Nancy Lehane will open the festival at the Festival Grounds at 7pm on Friday, September 5, before the Rock Bar\u2019s Fancy Dress competition kicks off from 9pm.<\/p>\n
Ms Lehane competed in last week\u2019s Rose of Tralee International Festival, which was won by Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins.<\/p>\n
Treasurer of the Newmarket festival, Aaron Jennings, told The Corkman he is delighted that the current Cork Rose will open the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am surprised that Nancy has the time, I thought she would be too busy, but we got her, thank God,\u201d Mr Jennings laughed.<\/p>\n
Other events taking place during the opening weekend of the festival include a guided tour around the Island Wood by the biodiversity group, music bingo in Hourigan\u2019s Bar and a CYMS festival fun event, which will offer bouncy castles, face painting and an ice cream van on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A three-ball scramble pitch and putt competition will kick off Monday\u2019s festivities at 7pm before a trad night at An Cult\u00farlann.<\/p>\n
Mr Jennings said anticipation is building throughout Newmarket and neighbouring parishes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe excitement is building and we got great feedback from the posters as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Interesting events taking place throughout the week include a cake bake off, wine tasting and an under-18 disco. The Danny Byrne Band will take to the Hiland on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The festival will conclude on Sunday with a long-prepared fireworks display.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fireworks are something we have been working on for two or three years and we have them this year, which is exciting,\u201d Mr Jennings said.<\/p>\n
