{"id":334880,"date":"2026-02-13T06:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T06:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/334880\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T06:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T06:12:07","slug":"trump-repeals-landmark-climate-finding-in-gift-to-billionaire-polluters-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/334880\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump repeals landmark climate finding in gift to \u2018billionaire polluters\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Trump<\/a> administration has revoked the bedrock scientific determination that gives the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us\/\">US<\/a> government the ability to regulate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">climate-heating<\/a> pollution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move was described as a gift to \u201cbillionaire polluters\u201d at the expense of Americans\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The endangerment finding, which states that the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere endangers public health and welfare, has since 2009 allowed the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to limit heat-trapping pollution from vehicles, power plants and other industrial sources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> called the move \u201cthe single largest deregulatory action in American history\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a big one if you\u2019re into environment,\u201d he told reporters on Thursday. \u201cThis is about as big as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move comes as part of Trump\u2019s bigger anti-environment push, which has seen him roll back pollution rules and boost oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barack-obama\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barack-obama\/\">Barack Obama<\/a> said the repeal will leave Americans \u201cless safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate change \u2013 all so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former secretary of state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-kerry\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-kerry\/\">John Kerry<\/a> called the new rule \u201cun-American\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRepealing the endangerment finding takes Orwellian governance to new heights and invites enormous damage to people and property around the world,\u201d said Kerry, who also served as Joe Biden\u2019s climate envoy. \u201cIgnoring warning signs will not stop the storm. It puts more Americans directly in its path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The final rule removes the government\u2019s ability to impose requirements to track, report and limit climate-heating pollution from cars and trucks. Cross\/New York Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump\u2019s EPA has separately proposed to find that emissions from power plants \u201cdo not contribute significantly to dangerous air pollution\u201d and therefore should not be regulated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joseph Goffman, who served as EPA air chief under Biden, expects the agency will apply their vehicles-focused arguments to stationary polluters in order to kill the endangerment finding for all sources of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInstead of the entire house of cards of all EPA climate regulation collapsing all at once today, it\u2019s going to be like a row of dominoes falling,\u201d said Goffman, who helped write and implement the Clean Air Act and worked directly on the endangerment finding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Environmental advocates have condemned the move as illegal. A slew of green groups have promised to take the EPA to court over the rollback, as has the state of California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2026\/01\/14\/ireland-set-for-more-extreme-weather-as-climate-data-points-to-worsening-trends\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland set for more extreme weather as climate data points to worsening trendsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf this reckless decision survives legal challenges, it will lead to more deadly wildfires, more extreme heat deaths, more climate-driven floods and droughts, and greater threats to communities nationwide \u2013 all while the EPA dismisses the overwhelming science that has protected public health for decades,\u201d Gavin Newsom, the California governor, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move marks \u201cthe most aggressive, ruthless act of dismantling public health protections in the agency\u2019s 55-year history\u201d, said Dominique Browning, director and co-founder of environmental advocacy group Moms Clean Air Force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a press release, the EPA said the move will save the US $1.3 trillion (\u20ac1.1 trillion), while Trump said on Thursday that the move \u201cwill save American consumers trillions of dollars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EPA administrator, Lee Zeldin, said the Obama and Biden administrations used the endangerment finding \u201cto steamroll into existence a leftwing wish list of costly climate policies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWho paid the biggest price? Hardworking families, small businesses, millions of Americans who just want a reliable, affordable car to get to work or take their kids to school or go to church on Sunday,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But though the rollback could save some corporations money, experts note it could take a big toll on ordinary Americans\u2019 wellbeing and wallets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/2026\/01\/19\/pilita-clark-even-the-most-powerful-business-leaders-stay-quiet-because-they-fear-trump\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Even the most powerful business leaders stay quiet because they fear TrumpOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One analysis from green group Environmental Defense Fund found the full repeal of the endangerment finding combined with Trump\u2019s proposal to roll back motor vehicle standards would result inasmuch as 18 billion more tonnes of planet-warming pollution by 2055 \u2013 the same as the annual emissions of China, the world\u2019s top polluter \u2013 and would impose up to $4.7 trillion in additional expenses tied to harmful climate and air pollution by that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Zeldin submitted the repeal of the legal determination for White House review last month. In July, he officially announced plans to repeal the finding, justifying the proposal with a widely criticised energy department report questioning climate science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The agency received half a million comments on the proposal. Last month, a federal judge said the July energy department report was created unlawfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the repeal of the endangerment finding, the EPA is claiming that the Clean Air Act is only meant to regulate pollution \u201cthat harms health or the environment through local and regional exposure\u201d. But there is scientific consensus that by trapping heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse gas emissions are intensifying dangerous extreme weather events, allowing diseases to spread faster, and worsening illnesses from allergies to lung disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump described the finding as \u201cthe legal foundation for the green new scam\u201d, which he claimed \u201cthe Obama and Biden administration used to destroy countless jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But the new rule will have ruinous consequences for working-class Americans, said Jason Walsh, executive director of BlueGreen Alliance, a coalition of labour unions and environmental groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBillionaires like Donald Trump don\u2019t suffer the devastation of climate change,\u201d he said. \u201cWorking people do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The rollback comes one month after the Trump administration announced it will pull the US from the foundational UN agreement to address the climate crisis, as well as the world\u2019s leading body of climate scientists. Over the past year, Zeldin has also launched an all-out assault on climate, air, water and chemical protections.
