{"id":33863,"date":"2025-08-31T01:32:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T01:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/33863\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T01:32:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T01:32:09","slug":"man-22-appears-in-court-over-temple-bar-attack-on-tourist-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/33863\/","title":{"rendered":"Man (22) appears in court over Temple Bar attack on tourist \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man in his early 20s appeared in court this morning in connection with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/08\/21\/english-tourist-in-critical-condition-following-assault-in-temple-bar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/08\/21\/english-tourist-in-critical-condition-following-assault-in-temple-bar\/\">assault of a tourist<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\">Temple Bar<\/a> area of Dublin last week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Darragh O\u2019Brien (22), of no fixed address, was charged with assault causing harm related to the attack in the early hours of last Thursday, August 21st. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was arrested by garda\u00ed yesterday evening and brought before Judge Monika Leech at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-district-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-district-court\/\">Dublin District Court<\/a>  on Saturday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court was told he is no longer welcome at his family home and is  \u201ccouch surfing with friends\u201d, causing difficulty in establishing bail conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is alleged Mr O\u2019Brien kicked the victim in the head during the attack. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard the victim, a man in his 40s and originally from England, left a Temple Bar pub and engaged in a verbal altercation with the accused. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A physical altercation followed in which Mr O\u2019Brien allegedly launched four kicks towards the victim, one of which hit his stomach and chest area, the court heard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The victim was then allegedly kicked in the head and knocked unconscious upon falling to the ground. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was initially taken to St James\u2019s Hospital on the night of the assault but was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital to undergo emergency specialist surgery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/2025\/07\/12\/the-real-temple-bar-thriving-cultural-quarter-or-a-violent-post-apocalyptic-place\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The real Temple Bar: Thriving cultural quarter or \u2018a violent post-apocalyptic place\u2019?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard the victim remains there in an \u201cunstable and critical condition\u201d, in an induced coma. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court was told Mr O\u2019Brien has no previous criminal history and \u201cunderstands the seriousness of this offence\u201d. He was remanded in custody with consent to bail subject to obtaining an address. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was asked to appear at Blanchardstown Garda station daily and to \u201cstay out of the Dublin 2 area\u201d.
