{"id":338766,"date":"2026-02-15T14:40:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T14:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/338766\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T14:40:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T14:40:10","slug":"big-measles-outbreak-affecting-children-under-10-confirmed-in-london-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/338766\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Big measles outbreak\u2019 affecting children under 10 confirmed in London \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A \u201cbig measles outbreak\u201d in parts of London is affecting unvaccinated children under the age of 10, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It said the outbreak in schools and nurseries in north-east London had left some children requiring hospital treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The agency had previously reported 34 laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Enfield from January 1 to February 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">More than 60 suspected cases of measles have been reported by seven schools and a nursery in Enfield, the Sunday Times reports.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/london-overground-lines-to-be-given-names-and-colours-from-wednesday-HSPLBTEFLJNPHE4GXSR5KLEQQI\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"London Overground lines to be given names and colours from Wednesday\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/I2TR4SXE6BMUPFJGP4QG6WYYY4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/fred-sirieix-bursting-with-pride-after-daughters-diving-bronze-at-olympics-BIVBC7SRXROHXL5RAC34JOSXHQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Fred Sirieix &#x2018;bursting with pride&#x2019; after daughter&#x2019;s diving bronze at Olympics\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/XWEYG4GJ5BLOVHRO72T3UKUQZ4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can spread very easily among people who are not fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While many people recover, the illness can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation and, in rare cases, long-term disability or death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dr Vanessa Saliba, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA, said: \u201cOur latest data shows we are now seeing a big measles outbreak in north-east London, mostly affecting unvaccinated children under 10 in schools and nurseries, with some being hospitalised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMeasles is a nasty illness for any child, but for some it can lead to long-term complications and tragically death, but is so easily preventable with two doses of the MMRV vaccine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf your child has missed any of their doses it\u2019s important to catch up as soon as possible, giving them vital protection against this highly contagious disease, but also helping to protect more vulnerable children around them who are too young or unable to have the vaccine due to a health condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWith Easter holidays fast approaching, it is a timely reminder to families travelling overseas to ensure all family members, especially children, are vaccinated, as measles is widespread in some countries with close links to the UK and there are ongoing outbreaks in parts of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Global health officials announced earlier this year the UK is no longer considered to have eliminated measles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Figures published last August by the UKHSA showed just 64.3% of five-year-olds in Enfield had received both doses of the MMR vaccine in 2024\/25 \u2013 one of the lowest rates in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A message currently posted on the NHS Ordnance Unity Centre For Health GP surgery\u2019s website said there is a \u201cfast-spreading measles outbreak in several schools across Enfield\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"There is no treatment for measles, only a vaccination to prevent catching it\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UU7YBJONMRMRDI2ULB6UT3Y7X4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"532\"\/>There is no treatment for measles, only a vaccination to prevent catching it (Nick Potts\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It added: \u201cInfections have been confirmed across at least seven schools in Enfield and Haringey and it is spreading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cDuring this recent outbreak, one in five children have been hospitalised due to measles and all of them had not been fully immunised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Enfield Council said it is \u201cworking closely with the UK Health Security Agency, the NHS and local partners to respond to a confirmed outbreak of measles in the borough\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Alev Cazimoglu, the council\u2019s cabinet member for health and social care, said: \u201cThe current outbreak has mainly affected children and some have required additional care with a short stay in hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMeasles is one of the most infectious known diseases. It is approximately six times more infectious than Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCatching the measles is entirely preventable, but it spreads extremely quickly where vaccination levels are low. By checking your family\u2019s vaccination status and taking up the free NHS vaccine, you are protecting not only yourselves but also vulnerable members of our community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cVaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and your family.
