{"id":33956,"date":"2025-08-31T02:40:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T02:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/33956\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T02:40:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T02:40:13","slug":"teen-who-died-at-belfast-festival-was-full-of-life-with-big-dreams-funeral-hears-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/33956\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen who died at Belfast festival was \u2018full of life\u2019 with \u2018big dreams\u2019, funeral hears \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A 17-year-old girl who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/08\/25\/teenager-dies-at-belfast-festival-while-two-others-hospitalised\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/08\/25\/teenager-dies-at-belfast-festival-while-two-others-hospitalised\/\">died at a musical festival in Belfast last weekend<\/a> will be remembered for being \u201cfeisty, loving and full of life\u201d, mourners at her funeral Mass have heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mia Keevan from Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary, had been attending the Emerge Music Festival in Boucher Road Fields, south <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a>, when she became suddenly unwell last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but died a short time later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a eulogy on Saturday, her older sister Kyah told the congregation  in St Nicholas\u2019 Church that she was \u201chonoured\u201d to speak on behalf of \u201ceveryone who loved her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kyah thanked the community \u201cfor everything\u201d that had been done for them over the past week. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see the people of Carrick-on-Suir and beyond\u201d help them in their \u201ctime of need\u201d, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMia was feisty, loving and full of life. She could eat you without salt and tell you exactly what she thought whether you wanted to hear it or not. If  she didn\u2019t like your outfit you would know about it. That was honestly part of her charm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMia was unique and that\u2019s what made her so special. She had a way of making everyone laugh and no matter how annoyed you were at her you couldn\u2019t stay mad for long. She ran her own life always on her terms and we loved that about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kyah  said her younger sister had \u201cbig dreams,\u201d and visiting her in Australia was one of those. \u201cThere were always new ones (dreams) popping into her head every single minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She told the Mass how Mia \u201cloved beauty, lashes, nails and of course her vapes. There was never a time she didn\u2019t have one in her hand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/08\/30\/man-22-appears-in-court-over-temple-bar-attack-on-tourist\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Man (22) appears in court over Temple Bar attack on touristOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJust recently she bought her first car and it was her absolute pride and joy, although it might have needed some work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her older sister described how, over the past months, Mia was the happiest she had ever been. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEverything was falling into place and some of her dreams had come through. Her car, her boyfriend Jack, and she was so close to her 18th birthday. We fought like every family does, but she never held a grudge. We could argue one minute and the next she would be chatting away about something else. She loved deeply, and when she did you felt it. She was fiercely loyal and you were only her true friend if she hadn\u2019t blocked you (on social media) at some point,\u201d Kyah continued. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Reflecting on Mia\u2019s death, she said: \u201cWhat happened to her was tragic and in no way can we make sense of it. Her spirit, her laughter, her honesty, her dreams and her love will never leave us. She lived her life boldly and she made an impact on everyone who knew her. Rest easy Mia, you will always be with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Symbols of the teenager\u2019s life presented during the Mass included a photo of Mia, her car keys, a vape, false lashes and nails, her fake tan and a set of hair straighteners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/08\/29\/irish-woman-gena-heraty-kidnapped-in-haiti-has-been-released-along-with-other-captives\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irish woman Gena Heraty kidnapped in Haiti has been released along with other captivesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Parish Priest Fr Paul Waldron in his homily said:  \u201cMia was not one who went quietly through life; she ran, she danced, she climbed, maybe sometimes she climbed to some places she shouldn\u2019t climb and do things she shouldn\u2019t do. She was always chasing what mattered.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He recounted how her family were telling him that she was \u201ca lovable rogue\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe has left behind a legacy for all of us far bigger than her 17 years. Mia\u2019s life had its ups and downs like all of (as) she lost her father.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he warned young people in the congregation to be careful about the choices they make.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI want to talk to you and Mia\u2019s family want to talk to you as well. We just want you to be careful, watch out for yourselves, be cautious, to think about the choices that we make, to be there for each other \u2013 and that\u2019s what we want for you. They (Mia\u2019s family) asked me to say that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her burial took place after her funeral Mass  in St Mary\u2019s cemetery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Friday the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/police-service-of-northern-ireland-psni\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/police-service-of-northern-ireland-psni\/\">PSNI<\/a> urged the public to refrain from speculation following the deaths of  Mia and 24-year-old Trae Keenan from Newcastle, Co Down, as both had attended a music festival in Belfast last weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Keenan fell ill in rented accommodation in south Belfast and later died last Sunday.
